PAGE 20 --- WATERLOO mu. WEDNESDAY, Am IIS, For nearly a half century each of these potters made a fascinating array of products ranging from ordinary functional wares to strikingly distinctive speciality pieces for family and friends. Two Village Potters, a presentation of hand- made earthenwares by Waterloo County 19th-cen- tury craftsmen William K. Eby and Adam Biemstihl, will be on display in the Heritage Gallery of the Joseph Schneider Hans until April Visitors to the exhibition will be treated to a vivid presentation of glazes and forms. Many features are characteristic of the approaches of Germanic potters generally, falling back upon conventional techniques inherited from the craft tradition of their homeland. Additionally, however, it will be possible to see the unique features used by these two individuals which for some time have served to make their pieces familiar to observers, students and collectors of Ontario Earthenware. German potters in Canada often used metallic oxides to create a variety of reds, yellows and greens. The glazes were at least partially trans- parent, permitting the red colour of the clay body to show through. Both Eby and Biemstihl exerv Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Youth Orchestra will present the final concert of its 135-88 season April 27 at 1:30 pan. at Centre In The Square. In a few instances, however, more care was taken to create recognizable motifs, such as the 'cherry' motif used by William Eby. Adam Biemstihl clee to feature two whimsical chickens drawn in green slip on a large bowl he made for his daughter, Emily. Her name and the name of the town where he lived and worked, Bridgeport, accompanied the figures. Both Eby and Biernstihl are known to have made unusual items such as these for their children and other family members and several of these unique pieces are included in the exhibit. Visitors to Two Village Potters will also have the opportunity to do their own theorizing about potters and makers. Alongside the various exam- ples attributed to Eby and Biernstihl will be a grouping of "mystery" pieces. Observers are invited to make their own guesses as to who made what on the basis of given clues and hunches.
