Marg Zavaros Chronicle Special There is always something fleeting in the way of impressions gained by a traveller in foreign lands. The feeling of not quite being able to be part of that particular culture or way of life is constantly present. Each traveller comes home with distinctive impressions, photos and slides to share with others. Verbal and written accounts seem to be better than photos of the rear view of a camel on a cloudy day. . Kildare Dobbs, Canadian author, has put together the first anthology of short stories of Canadian authors and their impressions while en route or settled in foreign lands. Dobbs, who has been gadding about the globe for many years himself, includes a story of his own set in Morocco. The discomfort of Moroccan nights not spent in the Holiday Inn create a grim picture for the prospective tourist. Flies, heat, religious chanting and a lumpy matress on the t1oor conspire to rob Dobbs of his sleep. During the day, hippies, the smell of kit and hash and the lack of water put Dobbs in a generally foul mood too. His purpose herevis to iisit his son who is a member of a hippy camp. Carolyn MacEwen poet, playwright and novelist writes of her stay in Greece. This is written as diary entries which it probably was at the time. She does little grumbling about the lack of creature comforts and conveys a genuine feeling of warmth for the people, customs and land. She includes her poetry along with the prose. "Calcutta", by Clark Blaise and Bharati Mukherjee is a story in which the authors evoke the smell and taste of Calcutta along with the recognition that life in less than ideal Ontario Ministry of Citizenship aiid Culture through Wintario City of Waterloo Waterloo Chamber of Commerce Music Performance Trust Fund Provincial and Federal Governments Raytheon Canada Labatt’s Ontario Breweries J.M. This is an excerpt from the book Days and Nights in Cal- outta. The story by Morley Callaghan is set in Paris, 1929, he reminises about the time spent engaged in talk with cronies Scott Fitsgerald, Ernest Hemmingway and James Joyce. The pity here is that more is not disclosed as to what was said in those literary and philosophi- cal rap sessions. Hugh MacLennan's "New York, New York", gives his impressions of that city in 1933 while on a business trip concerning the publication of a novel. Another selection by relatively unknown 19th century author Sara Jeanette Duncan follows the voyage on a Peninsular, Oriental ship. There is a definate Victorian flavour here with the flowery descriptive prose so typical of that time. Throughout most of these stories there is the impression that these Canadians are tolerat- ing their sojourns in foreign lands to soak up the local colour but there's the unsaid feeling that they miss Canada. A few of these stories are intriguing while others tend to dwell on the negative conditions of less fortunate countries. - Drawings included are by local artist Tony Urquhart who lives in Wellesley and teaches at the University of Waterloo. These stories would go well with a cheese slice on white nibbled idly on a hot listless day beside a pool, away from home. Away From Home - Edited by Klldare Dobbs - Dene“ - 354 p. What these authors gained subconciously while on these Junkets and how they ultimately influenced their future writing is possibly the gist of this whole collection. Marsiand Centre Ltd.
