The UW Arts Centre and the Waterloo Regional Branch of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, present The Mikado at the Hu- manities Theatre, University of Waterloo, April 9, IO, 11 and 12, Celebrating its tenth year, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society will be performing this ever popular look at Japanese Romance and Politics as seen through the eyes of 19th century England. New to leading roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan Society are Jennifer Toews and Devin Dalton. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet will come to Centre In The Square Tuesday, April 15 at 8 Cartada's oldest existing professional ballet company, the Royal Winnipeg was founded in 1939. In 1953, the Company received its Royal title, the first granted under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1958, Arnold Spohr was appointed artistic director and it is under his direction that the Ballet has grown and developed to take its place among the world's internationally renowned companies. The Royal Winnipeg first began to tour Canada in 1945. Today, the Company spends approximately 20 weeks per year touring. Compact in size, the Company has 26 dancers, a touring orchestra of 14 musicians, a production crew of seven, and a semi-trailer with approximately 55,000 lbs. of equipment. Throughout its history, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet has been a dance leader. It received Gold Medals at the International Ballet Festival in Paris in 1968. At the 1980 International Ballet Competitions in Varna, Bulgaria, Hart received a Gold Medal and the Award for Exceptional Artistic Achievement; David Peregrine received a Bronze Medal; Music Director Earl Stratford received a Gold Medal for his accompaniment and Norbert Vesak was awarded the Gold Medal for choreography (BELONG PAS DE DEUX).
