PAGE u - WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY. m1 9, was Chronicle Staff Waterloo will not consider the establishment of a municipal non-profit housing corporation, but rather throw its support behind a regional initiative that will address the problem of housing low income families. The proposed regionally based municipal non-profit corporation would construct, own and man- age housing projects at no cost to the local taxpayer. The municipality would only take an active role in 1987 if the region does not pursue non-profit housing. At the time Waterloo would request funding from the Ministry of Housing to conduct a muncipal housing study. Such studies have already been carried out in Cambridge and Kitchener, with both cities slated to receive provincial units later this year. Waterloo Ald. Brian Turnbull, who is also the region's planning and developing com- mittee chairman. says the region will work hard to obtain units for Waterloo next year. A planning report adopted by council Monday night suggested "that Kitchener and Cambridge could proceed independently with the understanding that the portfolios could be incorporated into a regional corporation at a later date." The planning report also sug- gested that the city encourage the province to recognize the need for student accommodation and to develop assistance pro- grams to address the need.
