Tim Wharnsby Chronicle Special For the past two hockey seaâ€" sons, I haven‘t seen a Super Bow! game or an episode of ‘"60 Minutes‘"‘ because my Sunday nights were spent in the penalty box at Waterloo Arena during Siskin games. â€" I‘m not complaining, because being the official scorer and p.a. announcer for the ‘Skins proved to be interesting and unpredictâ€" able to say the least. Let‘s recall some of these odd experiences by dishing out a few awards for the most memorable incidents. MICROPHONE MISTAKE â€"â€" Nobody lets you forget a mistake made "on the air‘‘. Whether it was heckling from someone durâ€" ing the game or a comment about it after, the fans will let you know. Confessions from the... It‘s too hard to narrow this category down to one specific occasion, probably because there were so many mistakes made. But to name a few good ones would be easy. One time when announcing the introduction, 1 said, ‘*Welcome to Waterloo Arena ... tonight the Siskins play host to the Camâ€" bridge Winterhawks." That parâ€" ticular night the Siskins were playing Guelph. â€" Then there is the time I invited the fans to "pay a visit to the Siskin Souvenir Stand" during the second period intermission, only to find out later it had closed during the first intermission. This year, during the first game of the Siskinâ€"Ranger B Take a moment. To make their day. Once a month. When Waterloo Chronicle carriers like Nicole Proctor ask our readers to contribute $1 to our Voluntary Paid Circulation program the last Wednesday of each month, what they‘re really asking is a show of support for your community newspaper and the friendly, reliable service you receive each week. We believe we‘re an important voice in the community, and through your contribution to Voluntary Paid, you remind us of that fact. Loud and clear. Once a month, you really know how to make our day. Thanks. Voluntary Paid Circulation $1 per month What a buy â€" Give it a try! Sin bin series, I forgot to announce that the first overâ€"time period wasn‘t suddenâ€"death but a full ten minâ€" utes. So when Kitchener scored with about seven minutes still to play, about half the arena empâ€" tied thinking the game was over. BEST PENALTY BOX PERâ€" SONALITY â€" This award has to go to Todd Loveday. A member of the 1984â€"85 team, "Luvy" always did something unexpectâ€" His favorite prank was to try to make me laugh while announcâ€" ing his penalty. After catching on to him, I wouldn‘t open the penalty box door until I was done announcing his penalty. An honorable mention goes to Don Oberle and Dennis Brox. Tim Wharnsby These two players liked to poke me in the ribs with their sticks while anouncing their penalties. MOST: FREQUENT VISITOR â€" Jeff Sittler edges out Loveday here. But I can‘t figure out why he only takes penalties at home in the Arena. Maybe he just wants to come in and talk to his old buddy Doober (my nickname). Or maybe it‘s to visit my counterparts (the timeâ€" keepers) Cindy and Michelle Beaupre. THE "THAT WASN‘T A PENâ€" ALTY, WAS IT?" AWARD â€" Both Terry McCutcheon and Mike Fair had a habit of saying this upon entering the penalty There are two standard anâ€" swers you give this type of player: ‘‘You were robbed Terry," or "I‘m sorry Mike, I didn‘t see it." MY FAVOURITE FAN â€" The fans around the penalty box can become hostile at times. But nothing compared to fans in Stratford. They tend to throw things. Last year, while sitting in the penalty box I received a pop can in the head and collected about 83 cents worth of pennies thrown. I‘m not sure, but maybe this category should have been changed to "My Only Fan." Without a doubt this would be nineâ€"yearâ€"old Holly Oberholzer. She was always glad to go to the concession booth for me when I was too lazy. But what topped it off was the Valentine‘s Day card she gave to me at a game back in February.
