PAGE 28 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 1986 Tim Wharnsby Chronicle Special For a couple of guys who at first had trouble making the Waterloo Siskins, John McKerâ€" row andâ€"Steve McGrinder have now made their mark with the Owen Sound Greys of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. Both players were important ingredients during the Siskins two championship seasons. But they originally had trouble hookâ€" ing onto the Junior B club. McKerrow was cut twice by Waterloo before being picked up from the juveniles halfâ€"way through the 1982â€"83 season and McGrinder played sparingly in his first season (1983â€"84). With the Siskins, the two blosâ€" somed into solid hockey players. They became welcome additions this season in Owen Sound, a team competing in their first season in the OJHL. "John and Steve are the heart and soul of this hockey club," replied Greys general manager Ray McKelvie when asked about their importance before Greys‘ season ended. The Greys finished the regular season in third place in the six team league and were eliminated by the Markham Waxers in the first round of the play offs. McKerâ€" row, the team captain of the Greys, finished third among the league scoring leaders and led his own team. Over the 50 game schedule he scored 25 goals and added 54 assists. McGrinder scored 12 goals and 33 assists in 44 games to lead all defencemen on his team. This kind of play didn‘t go unnoticed, as both were selected to play in the league‘s allâ€"star game. The Greys first year coach Steve Robson also noticed their excellent play. "John comes ready to play every game. He‘s a sound twoâ€" way hockey player and plays hard in both ends of. the rink," said Robson. ‘"He (McGrinder) is what can be described as an offensive defenceman. He has excellent offensive skills, he passes and shoots the puck well, and is probably one of the fastest skatâ€" ers in the league," stated Robâ€" son. McKelvie adds, "Steve is one of the most popular players here in Owen Sound and one of the most exciting in the league." be two teams from Kitchener as well as teams from Ayr, London, Kincardine, St. Clements, Pinâ€" eridge and Waterlioo. Admittance will be free and a draw will be held at noon to help cover costs of the tournament. Tickets will be on sale for 50 cents each or three for a dollar. 886â€"2060 BRBmea ww# Robson and McKelvie deserve a great deal of credit for blendâ€" ing a mixture of experienced players and rookies into a legitiâ€" mate contender for the league championship. Some of those experienced players include McKerrow and McGrinder. "Both are veterans from winâ€" ning organizations. We hoped this might rub off on some of the other players,"‘ said Robson. "Johnny is probably the ideal captain for this team. The disâ€" cipline he shows both on and off the ice rubs off on the other players,"‘ said McKelvie of choosing McKerrow as team captain. They describe the OJHL as a much quicker league with stronger players and better goalâ€" tending. But why the change, guys, why not stick around and continue to play for the Siskins? "There is a better chance for advancement here, this league is exposed to the scouts more so than in Junior B,‘‘ said McGrinder. McKerrow agrees with McGrinder, and also adds, "There was a chance for an education here for me (enrolled at Georgian College in Owen Sound). It was also my last year of junior hockey and this team offered me a chance to move up into a higher league." Well, both moves proved to be successful. The 19â€"yearâ€"old McGrinder received a full scholâ€" arship to the University of Miami in Ohio, where former Siskin Chris Archer now plays. And the 20â€"yearâ€"old McKerrow has had several offers, with the frontrunâ€" ner being Mount Allison Univerâ€" sity in New Brunswick.
