Coral Andrews Chronicle Special ‘"‘The heart is a very resilient little muscle," says Mickey Sachs, who falls in love after thoroughly questioning life, death and his first marriage. The hyper television executive falls head over heels with a girl he literally detested on the first date, which he said was "like the Nuremberg trials." Says Sachs‘ alterâ€"ego Woody Allen, "Hannah and her Sisters (in town at Cineplex) is a New York kind of comedyâ€"kind of comedy." It‘s ‘kind of funny. And it‘s a very resilient little film. Hannah and her Sisters is Allen‘s 14th film and once again he uses the perky team of Gordon Willis, Charles H. Joffe and Susan E. Morse, a fine behindâ€" theâ€"scenes ensemble. There‘s the old love and death lecture, as Allen, the ultimate hypochondriac, escapes the slim possibility of a brain tumor. He toys with the idea of converting to Catholicism, ("T‘l even dye Easter eggs") but being Jewish he defers (*‘*Why die now and pay later"‘). Allen has meticulously woven all his universal queries, hangâ€" ups, conundrums, and unorthoâ€" dox paradoxes into one workable screen piece. But Allen is not the main character in Hannah, which covers three Thanksgivings. It‘s a dapper heartplay, a sliceâ€"ofâ€"life sophistication between three sisâ€" ters that only writer/director Allen is capable of inventing. It is a movie spiced with the finest melody this side of the screen including Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Rodgers and Hart, and Montreal moderns 39 Steps (which cause the temporary hearing loss responsible for Allen‘s suggested brain tumor rumor). Hannah is an amateur actress (Mia Farrow), the perfect wife in a ‘preconceived‘ marriage who gives everything but seems to want nothing in return. Her holierâ€"thanâ€"thou English hubby Elliot (Michael Caine â€" hilarious as the man who ‘can‘t fathom his own heart) is torn between his loyalty to Hannah and an inâ€" creasing lust for Hannah‘s younger sister Lee played by Barbara Hershey. Lee lives with Frederic (Max Von Sydow), an artist, as his infinite student and strident bedâ€" room nymph. Lee is ready for a tumble with Elliot to escape her intellectually boring existence, despite the complications. Holly is the third sister (Dianne Weist), a former coâ€" caine addict ("If you snort anyâ€" more of that stuff, you‘ll grow a third nostril," says Allen on their e 11 Varieties of Fish & Chips (including Halibut) e Clam â€"Chowder e Back Bacon on a Bun }o Burgers e Sandwiches _ C CLOSED SUNDAYS â€"â€" NOW N OUR TWELFTH YEAR â€" _ BREAKFAST served any time of RESTAURANT "EVERYBODY‘S EATING FISH®" TASTE OUR WEEKLY SPECiAYS " WHHAIREF FAMILY DINING OPEN MON.â€"SAT a A M â€"8 P M 478â€"A Albert St. N. â€" Next to Zehre Parkdaie Plaza â€" BB5â€"O580 â€" Waterloo We Accept Viea & MesterCard Allen has hit in Hannah and Sisters TAKEâ€"OUT first and last horrendous date). Holly is an aspiring failure of an actress and about as hyper as they come in New York. She is the constant victim of her best undernu'ning friend April (Carrie Fisher). All the relationships grow and prosper, or dissolve depending on circumstances and all three are embellished with Allen‘s witty insight and ruthless humor which often stems from Allen‘s misfortune or anyone else‘s. The director attacks television, with wry commentary on wresâ€" tling, deodorant salesmen, and evangelists. Holly is the epitome of the ‘""underconfident‘‘ person. â€" "If Jesus came back and saw what they were doing in his name, he‘d never stop throwing up.‘) â€" o o â€" â€" Another Hannah highlight is an amusing sequence about artifiâ€" cial insemination as Allen and Farrow discuss a best friend as a possible donor. "I gave blood before. I gave clothing to the poor, but sperm. Honey, this is a matter for your analyst and nine," says Allen‘s pal, Tony Roberts, to his thunâ€" derstruck spouse. In another humorous moment Hershey and Caine are left alone. Caine has seduced her with page 112 of E.E. Cummings, and Hershey diligently discusses getâ€" ting her teeth cleaned. "They wear rubber gloves in case they get AIDS." 1 ; || â€" a special magazine published once a year by Exchange and the Waterloo Chronicle.
