PAGE 22 - WATERLOO CHRONKRE. WEDNESDAY. MARCH " By Marg Zavaros Chronicle Special Her sandpaper warnings and the careful timing of her speeches were another Richard m high point. _ - . Writing children's books is more difficult than writing for adults, according to authors of children's literature. 7 _ _ _ Because the book is written by an adult at a child's level, the author must regress into his own childhood to search out long-forgotten responses of wonder and honesty. It is often difficult to recapture the innocence and simple reasoning children naturally possess. Laura Astwood as Queen Elizabeth is credible but tends to overdo her sternness at times. Beth Jost as Lady Anne Neville, object of Richard's desire, is vulnerable and believ- able. All three women are theatrically poi- gnant in their cause - a nice contrast to the Strong acting Numerous books have been written with animals and cartoon-like characters trans- posed in human form and situation, but now, some authors are broaching subjects that have formerly been taboo in children’s literature. Death, divorce, abduction and molestation are all being presented in a story-telling dialogue set in the here and now. It is okay for witches and wolves to die in fairy tales, but what about a beloved relative. British author John Birningham's "Gram pa" is one of the best children's books available dealing with death. The text is sparce, the illustrations are large and colorful. Various drawings of a child and her grandfa- ther fishing, making mud pies, skipping and walking are accompanied by their conversa- tions. uvéi'endpa’s line of thought is quite disjointed with the child's yet they are totally realistic for their ages. Then one day grandpa becomes ill and cannot come out to play. He is pictured in his favorite green chair with hot water bottle and medicine. On the next to last page the empty green chair is the only illustration on the page. The last page shows the girl racing across a field - alone. The author says adults will find this story more devastating than children. There is a beautiful level of simplicity here, leaving much unsaid. It may prompt some explanation though and completely pass over the bead of the pre-sehooler/seven-year-old. when asked, "where did grandpa go?", the young child will reply, "He's gone to the bathroom" or "He's sick in bed" etc. This book will be most valuable for the child who is relentlessly questioning a parent as to the whereabouts of a grandparent who has recently died. The book never does say where indeed grandpa did go or how he arrived there, which is best left to the imagination. John Bimingham has written numerous other books for children and is presently working on an adult book about Britain, but promises not to abandon his young readers. .
