Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Staff If Russ Howard had kept his last stone in the house in one of the last ends of the championship game of the 1986 Labatt Brier, his Ontario rink might be going to represent Canada in the Silver Broom instead of the Alberta rink skipped by Ed Lukowich. But the stone rolled out of the house and it can be said that Howard did as the Toronto Blue Jays have often done in their own game: He lost it in the ninth. Howard was trailing 3â€"2 but seemed to have taken command in the ninth end when he had a chance to take out an Alberta stone and stay on himself to go ahead 4â€"3. His failure to do so meant that he was tied 3â€"3 with Lukowich going into the 10th end. ANY LARGE SUBMARINE Bams s uw had the hammer, made the point he needed and the rest is history: Cool Hand Luke won the Brier with his second win over his intense opponent from Ontario in four days. Thursday, Howard scored three in the eighth end only to have Lukowich roar back with three in the ninth to win 7â€"5. Lukowich went directly to the finals while Howard scored a 6â€"5 win over Barry McPhee‘s British Columbia rink to reach the final. Organisers had hoped for recordâ€"breaking attenâ€" dance for this year‘s event in Kitchener but they fell slightly short of their goal. Attendance over the eight days, March 2â€"9, was 97,684, 8,710 short of the recordâ€"setting 106,394 fans who saw the 1982 Brier in Brandon, Man. The only other time the Brier had been held in Kitchener was in 1962 and then it attracted just 37,013 fans. You‘ll be amazed at its response and road manners.
