PAGE 26 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESODAY, MARCH 12, 1986 Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Staff â€" Let‘s tell it like it is in five words or less: The better team won. Stratford Cullitons built up a 6â€"1 lead, then hung on to defeat Waterloo Siskins 6â€"5 to take their Midwestern Junior B Hockey League bestâ€"ofâ€"seven final series in a fourâ€"game sweep. In doing so, Cullitons extended their record over the last 38 games to 36 wins, a loss and a tie. Their last loss was to Siskins on the final day of the regular season but they were short six players. â€" Siskins had won the Ontario championship the past two seasons and now one question remains: Can Cullitons keep the championship in the league? â€" â€" â€" Of course, Culliton coach Denis Flanaghan, Jr., was in no position to make predictions concerning his team‘s bid for an allâ€"Ontario championship since they‘re faced with three more series if they go the distance. j "I think Stratford has a pretty good chance," said Siskins coach Ross Yantzi. ‘"They‘ve got scoring on all three lines and their defence is strong and tough. â€" â€" ‘"‘The difference between our team and their team is they have so many snipers. We have to work so hard for goals and they come so naturally for them (Cullitons)." â€" *4 _ ‘"Waterioo‘s represented the league well and we certainly want to keep the (championship) here but it‘s a long road."rsaAid Flapghqn. Cullitons jumped out ahead 4â€"1 in the first period, outshooting Siskins 22â€"7, and added two quick power play goals in the second period. But Siskins added three second period goals to stay respectable when it looked like the game would turn into a rout. ‘‘We‘re satisfied with the way we came back and turned it into a game," said Yantzi. ‘"When you‘re down 6â€"1 it‘s easy to give up but the guys showed some pride and went at it. They can hold their heads Cullitons‘ Kevin Dahi was penalised for illegal equipment at 17: 04 of the third period as the result of Siskins‘ call for a stick measurement. Then Siskins pulled Scott MacDonald for the extra attacker and Paul Gehl scored at 18: 50 to put them within one goal. Scoring for Cullitons were Marc Potvin, with two, Warren Bullock, Shawn Heaphy, Scott Rex and Nelson Emerson. â€" & Other Siskins scorers were Greg Munroe, Dean DeSilva, Don Oberle and Scott McCulloch. If Yantzi has no more games to coach, his work as manager continues as he is in his first season of recruiting after being hired last August. Siskins were without a manager from May until August of last year after Pete Brill resigned and that had to break the team‘s continuity with respect to recruiting. MacDonald came into the game at 1: 25 of the second period, the time of Cullitons‘ sixth goal on John Davenport. o . ‘"‘I‘ve been doing some recruiting so 1 hope to strengthen some spots where we were weak," said Yantzi. ‘"We have a good nucleus coming back. I‘m going to take the rest of the night off and get back to work tomorrow."
