Riding out of the smogâ€" covered California sunset comes The Long Ryders, looking like four hopefuls for an Aaron Spelling primeâ€"time oater. With their shaggy haircuts and rustic attire, these cowpokes could very well be Buffalo Springâ€" field circa Neil Young and Stephen Stills. But somehow, the dust on the boots doesn‘t seem real and for all the commiseration about the erosion of traditional values, they come across as the Eagles with Gucci chaps. autoâ€"reverse. Until recently, the Ryders were just another of the many bands caught up in the frivolity of the psychedelia revival. For that reason, a switch to material that deals with a return to musical and cultural roots and an awareness of social concerns â€" the plight of the farmer, what‘s happened to the trains, remember the Depresâ€" sion, etc. â€" seems a touch out of step. Lead singer Sid Griffin wants us to believe his reverence for the past but the message is undermined by incongruities such as the back cover listing of the band‘s Fan Club directly below a Depressionâ€"era photograph. 100 walts each twoâ€"way 6x9. 160 watts total 10 bands. 60 watts total PIONEER TSâ€"6904 CAR SPEAKERS, CONCORD HPLâ€"102 CAR CASSETTE, autoâ€"reverse, AMâ€"FM digital, clock, 20 watts total The music is uncluttered, hardâ€"edged country rock, an extension of the Byrds/Flyâ€" ing Burito Bros./Eagles groundwork. And once you keep that in perspective, this is a pretty good album. The Cult Love Polygram If there‘s a missing link between psychedeâ€" lia and heavy metal, it could be the Cult. Originally called the Southern Death Cult and then Death Cult, the name was shortened to remove any connotations of involvement in saâ€" tanism. There is nothing on Love that will leave the kids sacrificing one another to the heavy metal gods. Essentially a meeting ground of ‘60s ideology and the simplistic three chord song structures of early ‘70s heavy metal, the Cult sound like a compromise between the Byrds and Bauhaus. Or, imagine something like Timothy Leary writing the lyrics for Led Zeppelin II and the picture should be clear. If you strip away the Haight Asbury dialect, the Cult are basically competent, hard rockers. Led by exâ€"Theatre of Hate guitarist Billy Duffy â€" his solos are variations on Clapton‘s much copied wahâ€"wah on White Room â€" this is metal you can hum along with. Wham producer Steve Brown keeps the kinks to a minimum and the end result is a polished guitar/drum attack. For those who find Black Sabbath downright pathetic and Killing Joke too abrasive, the Cult may just be the answer.
