Chronicle Special For the past few years Canaâ€" dian industry and political leadâ€" ers have been talking fervently about the need to upgrade our industrial sector, to meet intenâ€" sified world competition. The University of Waterloo (UW) wants to contribute to closing the gap and feels one of the best ways to do so is to develop new strength in the area of integrated manufacturing. To this end, a project known as The Waterloo Centre for Computer Integrated Manufacturing (WATCIM â€" pronounced WATâ€" sim) has evolved. Dr. William C. Lennox, dean of engineering, announces the apâ€" pointment of Dr. Melvyn J. Marple as director of WATCIM. Marple is at Waterloo under a loan agreement between the uniâ€" versity and IBM Canada Ltd. He is to serve for the next two years. ‘"‘We at UW have all the essential parts. We have experâ€" tise in robotics, machine visin, CAD/CAM, flexible manufacturâ€" ing systems, production automaâ€" tion, process control, and manâ€" agement sciences with a focus on the management of technology," Lennox says. "What we have been needing is an umbrellaâ€"type organization such as WATCIM ... and we have to make sure it will relate very closely to the probâ€" lems of industry." "Computer Integrated Manâ€" ufacturing (CIM) is what Canaâ€" dian industry is going to have to get into if we are to compete with Japan and the other established and emerging industrial naâ€" tions," comments Lennox. "This is more than just automation or robotization;, it includes design, production planning, manageâ€" ment, marketing ... even the financial aspects of manufacturâ€" ing. It‘s a matter of integrating the various components â€" the islands of automation in a manâ€" ufacturing operation â€" in a comprehensive way. CIM is an overall strategy." He says universities all over North America are interested in developing CIM programs. The approach to IBM was made by Douglas Wright, UW president. Company officials responded favorably and selected Marple. This is the first time an industryâ€"seconded director has headed such a projâ€" ect, at Waterloo. Marple, who completed his doctorate in engineering at the University of Kansas, has been with IBM for 17 years. During much of this time he has been heavily involved with the develâ€" opment and manufacturing areas and particularly with small and mediumâ€"sized comâ€" puters and peripherals. IBM is a leader in automated manufacâ€" turing with several stateâ€"ofâ€"theâ€" art plants, fully automated from design to endâ€"product manufacâ€" ture. "IBM has invested significantâ€" ly in these concepts for many years," Marple says. _ _ â€" _ He is looking forward to the WATCIM challenge. He sees his new job as primarily a matter of Manon Harbec helping the university acquire a "strategic directipn‘‘ in connecâ€" tion with CIM. He will also serve as a liaison between the universiâ€" ty and industry. According to Lennox the "liaiâ€" son‘‘ work Marple will undertake may include arranging for indusâ€" trial visitors to come to the campus to participate in leadingâ€" edge research, arranging visits of UW faculty members to indusâ€" try to work as consultants or in industrial labs, offering short courses to industry, and inteâ€" grating graduate and undergradâ€" uate student programs with inâ€" dustry. ‘"Our model will be the unijverâ€" sity‘s Institute for Computer Research (ICR)," says Lennox, "which has been most successâ€" ful. In fact, while Dr. Marple is on campus he will serve as IBM‘s representative to the ICR." Marple is in UW‘s Pollock Hall but WATCIM will move into the new William G. Davis Computer Research Centre when it is completed, later this year. Canadd 1# cS Toll free, 8 amâ€"8 pm weekdays, EST.
