Beal Raiders of London Saturday night in the championship game of the Westâ€" ern regional high school tourâ€" nament, but they live to see another very important day. Lions and Raiders both adâ€" vance to the allâ€"Ontario high school championships starting today in London and it‘s the first time either team has made it that far. The allâ€"Ontario compeâ€" tition continues through Friday. Lions emerged as runnersâ€"up with the loss to Raiders. Earlier in the eightâ€"team tournament at University of Waterioo, they had beaten London‘s Catholic Central Crusaders 61â€"48 and J.F. Ross of Guelph 51â€"38. Cameron Heights Golden Gaels, another team representâ€" ing the Waterloo County league along with Lions, lost to Beal 58â€"50 in their opener. Raiders had gone ahead as much as 16â€"6 but Lions fought back to lead 21â€"20 at halftime on a lastâ€"minute twoâ€"pointer. Raiders, however, got four points from Tony Marcotullio when it counted most in the fourth quarter. Marcotullio finâ€" ished with 17 and Mike Alessio, who added another crucial three points, finished with nine. â€" Louis Medeiros and Dave Kleuskens each added 10 for Raiders. Lion‘s Nino Miksic scored 18 points and added 15 rebounds while Alex Urosevic helped out with 12 points. "We normally shoot better than we did," said Lions coach Tom Kieswetter, "but they ratâ€" tled us with their presses. We‘ve got to give them credit,. They work very hard. It was 21st win this season for Raide.s, who have lost just four times in tournaments. After a 15â€"year absence, Waterâ€" loo collegiate Vikings reentered the field of Waterloo County high school competitive swimming and proved to be a force to be reckoned with. A total of 16 Viking swimmers qualified for allâ€"Ontario competiâ€" tion this weekend at the Etobiâ€" coke Olympium and Jennifer Brunton took a gold medal in the 100 metre butterfly. Mike Hoehn took silver in the 100 individual medley. Angie Pinder was fourth in the breastâ€" stroke and Karen Millen was fourth in the 200 and 400 freesâ€" tyle. â€" Vikings‘ boys medley relay team of Oliver Gessner, Hud Ramelan, Justin Tiplady and Jamie MacKenzie placed fifth overall out of 22 Ontario teams. Other swimmers to qualify for the allâ€"Ontario meet include Mark Dietrich, Junichi Murata, Ian Hawkins, Gavin Morphet and Debbie Parsons. Three other qualifiers were Jennifer McPherson, Nancy Woodhall and Marieâ€"Louise Skafte. They were unable to attend because they were with the Region of Waterloo Swim Club at the Commonwealth Games Trials in Montreal. Vikings placed second overall at the recent Central Western Ontario meet after winning the Waterloo County meet with the boys team placing first and the girls team placing second.
