PAGE 22 - WATERLOO WOWLE, WEDNESDAY. MARCH 5, There's always publicity and fanfare about new publications but behind each book is the silent but essential publishing company: _ _ . Local publisher, John McBain founded his publishing company in 1980 in Guelph and came to Kitchener in 1983. The first Publica- tion, “I Remember," an autobiography, was written by the oldest living train engineer, Herbert Stitt who looked back with nostalgia to the travel era of the great "iron horse" John says old-timers are often qualified to write their experiences but many have difficulty. "Everyone over 65 has a story to tell but many don't know how to tell it. They need someone to tell it to." Another book, "Meet me at the Station," offered more nostalgic rail memorabilia. Author Elizabeth Willmot took a look with camera and pen at the fate of numerous old railway stations thrughout Ontario. The CNR Kitchener station was included here. John McBain reflects why he found this book of interest: "There is a great deal of interesting architecture and a sense of caring in these stations with cornice windows and decorative turrets." Although John has published the fiction of local author Don Gordon he says he wants to specialize in Canadiana. "l like fiction, but feel Canadiana will be of interest indefin- itely." Two published history books, "Little Para- dise" by Gottlieb Leibbrandt. a fine local history, and "Four Went to the Civil War" by Lois Darrock are examples of books of enduring topics. â€John’s: latest publication is "Birds of the Cottage Country" by William Mansell, or- nithologist and founder of Nature Canada NAD 7125 RECEIVER, PIONEER CT-1160 CASSETTE DECK MAD 6050C CASSETTE DECK, Dolby Bac, aduslahle Dias NAD 535SE COMPACT DISC PLKYER. tutt programabmlv best buy rated auto-reverse, Dolby BSC, mustc scan PIONEER PD-5010 CD PLAYER. 25 watts not ch t dvgnal tururug In" programabtMy MISSION MODEL 700 SPEAKERS. This paperback will appeal to novice bird lovers and is written in a chatty style for visitors and residents in the Muskoka region who inevitably spot looms, grebes and warblers and wish to identify their habitat and sound. John says publishing books has always been a risky business and he offers some valuable insights: _ _ _ "Now it's an even greater risk than in the past because the large publishing houses pump out paperbacks in such quantities." Although a book may be well written with an interesting topic, it may not sell well. "A book doesn't sell itself, advertising and promotion play a big part but if a book is not reviewed then people will not be aware of it. Reviewers tend to dwell on well-known authors and extensively review everything that author writes." John feels this situation could be reme died: "I'd like to see promotions of unknown and lesser known authors through reviews, pro- grams and interviews. There's some fine Canadian authors who've been writing a lifetime and receiving very little publicity. Canadians could be promoting their own authors more." "Whén dueried as to what it takes to be successful in publishing John gives some ad- vice: "Publishing is a gamble, but I believe in the free enterprise system along with a lot of hard work. I've never applied for a government grant, if there are losses, I'll be responsible for them." Birds of the Cottage Country. William Man- sell.
