This is a time when the burning issue of peace with justice is confronted with problems such as famine and hunger, racism and torture, military aggression and terrorism. The service raises social and ethical questions about current issues such as genetic engineering, unemployment and poverty, child neglect and the boredom of affluence. The World Day of Prayer is sponsored in Canada by the Women's Inter-Church Council of Canada (WlCC) which represents eleven of the major denominations in Canada. In Waterloo the World Day of Prayer service will be held at 2 pm. at First United Church, King and William Streets, and at 7:30 p.m. at St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, 53 Allen St. E., Waterloo. On Thursday evening "The Day of the Trumpet" will range across time from Newton to the modern possibilities of black holes and nuclear winter. Wu mm of wum. -iiaa is a thought-provoking speaker and an expert in the history ot science and technolo gy, whose academic interests range from chemical theory to Victorian steam locomotives. He is particularly intrigued by the relationship between science and technology and the Christian faith. The Pascal Lectures were es- tablished by members of the University of Waterloo to create a torum for Christian issues in an academic environment. The lec- ture series has brought to the university outstanding individu- als of international repute who have also distinguished them- selves in the area of Christian life and thought. Past speakers have included the renowned Brit- ish journalist Malcolm Mug- geridge, who inaugurated the lectures in 1978, and Madeleine L’Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time, who spoke in 1984. Russell's two lectures will be the eighth in the series on Christianity and the University.
