Architectural students make the grade in home design competition ' Woduhgrtgggn1mrmgo¢rwp2me~mmawnm HOME OF THE FAMOUS Chronicle Special After two months of preparation, two teams of University of Waterloo architectural stu- dents have been chosen as finalists in the R-2000 Student Design Challenge. The five students in the two teams are among 29 finalists vying for the grand prizes - two apprenticeship positions with Select Home Designs of Vancouver. More than 450 architecture and architectur- al technology students from 13 colleges and universities across the province took part in the R-2000 Student Design Challenge organized by the Ontario Ministry of Energy and co-sponsored by Fiberglass Canada and Select Home Designs. 3 FOOT SUB University of Waterloo finalists are: Team one: Montgomery King, Filippo Scarpazza. Team two: Peter Cizak, Andrew Jack and Elizabeth Ohi. Established to provide future architects and designers with a knowledge and understand- ing of energy-efficient design and building techniques, the competition introduced the W2000 standard for energy efficiency in new housing into the curriculum. "No one loses in this competition," says Ontario Energy Minister Vincent G. Kerrio. "Architectural students gain first-hand knowl- edge of the techniques available to achieve the R-2000 performance standard, which means builders can count on having more knowledge- able designers of R-2000 houses in the marketplace. And, of course, consumers then have a greater design selection of energy-em- We Deliver in Waterloo Inn-cam] 022ktveFl. engine . 5 speed man, tum . power trout disc bakes o intermittent Moon . now stamina o inane Mum. rate.†0 rear window ootooqov o cargo not com o Newman" . dune contra o atoctrtc sunroot (t RENAU LT only $7.45 Motors Inc. o trip computer . rent Mm wiper q Michoun stool batted tir-s . extra cum Manon . Each design had to meet the requirements of the R-2000 standard for energy efficiency in new home construction. The design also had to be suitable for an average-income family, economical, practical to build and marketable, with construction detailing that would ensure long-term perfor- mance and low maintenance. Judges selected 12 winning designs submitted by students from eight schools. The final rankings will be announced in Toronto later this month. Associate Professor Joe Samfay of Univer- sity of Waterloo’s architectural program says, "The realism of the project, as opposed to the theoretical aspects, has been of real value to the students in marketing, practical construe tion design and energy considerations." "We're very proud of the unique learning opportunity the 11-2000 Student Design Chal- lenge is providing to Ontario's architectural students," Kerrio added. Bursaries totalling $25,000 will be shared by the eight schools which submitted the 12 winning designs. The schools are: Algonquin College and Carleton University, both of Ottawa; Confederation College, Thunder Bay; George Brown College, Toronto; Humber College, Toronto (2 submis- sions); Mohawk College, Hamilton; Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Toronto (3 submis- sions).; and the University of Waterloo, Waterloo (2 submissions). Today, there are approximately 500 11-2000 homes throughout the province.
