PAGE 20 â€"â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1986 Nothing new (Continued from page 18) seventeen year old. Wildman, who is diabolically attractive, carries the role well, and should be considered for future screen reference. Coral Andrews Chronicle Special Love is wonderful the second time around. Especially if you are 62â€"yearâ€"old ‘widower‘ still married to a philandering cardiac specialist who just happens to have the most extraordinary ‘bedside‘ manner. Dorothy Bartlett lives alone in a cozy little cottage, by the lake away from the hustle and bustle of her former New York existence. She is an avid cook (Gourmet banquets for the Solitary Diner), collects plants (a senile cactus), and does her aerobics faithfully every day. She "talks" at her son David and daughter Nancy, through her stateâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"art telephone speaker. It‘s now forty years later. Stuart Reese wants an answer, so he deliberately steals his lady love‘s glasses at a high school reunion so he can sweet talk this former highâ€"school cheerleader into his heart. Enter Stuart Reese, Stuart Reese "who combs his hair with axle grease," a guy who has worshipped the earth Dorothy Bartlett plods on since Grade 2!!! He‘s a hairdresser, knuckle deep in falling hair and dandruff, who has fallen madly for Miss Dorothy, a guy who firmly believes good news always calls twice, and bad news calls until it gets an answer. Richard Donat as Sandy‘s hoâ€" lierâ€"thanâ€"thou major father, is staunch and stern in all situaâ€" tions yet still finds time to dance with an old flame, while the wifey is at rehearsal. The great double standard. Both are perfect bookend *parental units‘ â€" warm and cold depending on emotional motivaâ€" tion. But Mortifee and Donat Jane Mortifee as Sandy‘s wouldâ€"be librarian mother, who is an avid member of Little Theatre yet an abominable acâ€" tress, seems wooden and prudish in her portrayal, forever admonâ€" ishing her abusive daughter. Rubes, Douglas excel in charming Monkeyshines KWLT auditions Volunteer actors, stage crew plus teckies are needed for the mystery play ‘"Hide and Seek‘" being presented in early May by the Kâ€"W Little Theatre. Mortifee particularly is rather a disapâ€" pointment. But it isn‘t sister of singer Ann Mortifee‘s fault. The session musician/actress does what she can with Sandy Wilâ€" son‘s timeâ€"warp script. The whole concept is quaint but it‘s been done before, in Rebel Withâ€" out A Cause, or any number of fifties flicks. Cousin‘s high point features Sandy‘s two younger sisters all trussed up in mum‘s Sunday best garb as they high heel over to the lake to cool off. Langrick as Sandy clearly steals the show with her insightâ€" ful diaryâ€"writer‘s wit and inate girlish charms (rather like Dodie, from vintage television sitâ€"com My Three Sons). an un on on as un us un un w A Monkeyshines, which played recently at U of W‘s Humanities Theatre, was written by Suzanne Finlay, a lady weaned on stage and script, and to become a story editor for M.G.M. London, script supervisor for CBC series The Beachcombers, and finally a prominent contributor to American soap operas. Thus begins Monkeyshines, as both old friends reminisce, rediscover their lost youth, bury it again, and find true senior citizens‘ love while playing badminton in the front parlour! James B. Douglas as Stuart Reese plays this rather corny but goodâ€"natured hairdresser to perfection, as he summons up all the gall in his being to confess to his beloved how much he loves her, while she‘s under the dryer. Both distinguished players thoroughly enjoy themselves as they light up the audience and the stage with charming often quaint folly and Monâ€" keyshines. Susan Douglas Rubes, whom people will fondly remember as Cathy in soap opera The Guiding Light, has appeared on radio, television and Broadway. Rubes combines the best of all her media expertise in this role to make Dorothy sentimental but strong with a keen sense of judgement and wit.
