PAGE 18 - WATERLOO CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY Coral Andrews Chronicle Special Canada's favorite blue-jeaned boy next door, Bryan Adams, may sing about the summer of '69, but what about the summer of '59. On the brink of the revolution- ary sixties, it was a year filled with ponytails, pedal pushers, chiffon scarves, Frankie Ford's Sea Cruise, and Some Enchanted Evening in a budding twelve almost-U-responsible-liar-old girl's diary where 'NOTHING EVER HAPPENS', until 17-year- old dreamboat Butch Walker swings into her predictable Okanagan Valley existence. Nothing new in quaint American Cousin Great Pizza.... blow Delivered FREE' inquisitive 12-year-old who is just beginning to think of the opposite sex as something more than the enemy. Butch Walker is miniature James Dean caricature, a fresh spunky runaway come to pick cherries and wreak havoc for a short adventurous visit. When you see his parents it's no wonder why, especially his va- cant mother complete with bullet boobs and vacuous stare. Sandy automatically finds her- self swept off her sandals by this golden Boy Charming and his fire-engine red Cadillac Eldora- do chariot, as both cruise into town. Loads of typical teenage rebellion, including the old steal- ing, smoking, kissing, skinny dipping, speeding, and hanging out with the gang are the result. Langrick is an ultranaturai as the restless teenager, who is often too honest, even when she's talking to herself in the mirror and imagining the boy of her dreams. iiiiryearns for real life fam 658-51 1 1 26, 1986 Movie Review tasy. David Falk, associate professor of music at Laurier who will conduct the work, said the opera had its British premiere in 1953 and its premiere in the United States in 1960. Benjamin termed the work "a romantic melodrama in six scenes," and Falk said Benjamin's great strength is his ability to capture the dramatic impact of the work. a Marillion appears ; at Super Skate The Northstar Youth Organization presents Marillion, with special guests Dorian Gray and NEO-AU in concert Friday, 1 28, 8 p.m. at Super Skate Seven. - - - -- .... _ . ,_A-n_.:.__ u”... Originated in Mthi, Marillion (whose appellation was inspired by the Tolkein novel) is fronted by Fish, a Scottish woodcutter-cum vocalist, whose extravagance for stage makeup and clever theatrics have gathered notoriety from critics likening them to early Pink Floyd and Genesis. But the similarity ends there. Complemented by the talents of ex-Steve Hackett drummer Ian Mosely, keyboardist Mark Kelly, bassist Peter Trewavas and lead guitarist Steve Rotherey, Marillion have played to sold-out crowds in the UK, making them forerunners in the '80s progressive rock movement. In March 1983, their debut LP, and first segment in a trilogy Script For A Jester's Tear was released with the production skills of Nick Tauber. Entering the U.K. charts at No. T, Script spurned 3 hit singles, "Market Square Heroes," "He Knows, You Know," and "Garden Party." This LP according to Fish, "...honed in on the image of the malcontent and revolved around bedsit (one room apartment) thoughts." Following a gg-date, sold-out tour, Marillion released the second part of the trilogy, Fugazi, in May 1984 with producer Tauber once again. Fugazi, a Vietnamese word indicating disorder and chaos, focused on the interaction and friction within relationships, and the questionable social advantages of life on the road. The LP shot into the Top Ten on the U.K. charts and garnered wide critical acclaim. "For an album to be truly good, you must affect people," Fish states. So the culmination of the trilogy Misplaced Childhood is presented. This time with the talent of producer Chris Kimsey (of Rolling Stones fame), this LP heralds the demise of the jester and the introduction of the new character, the child. This LP is about the simplicities of youth - like someone starting again. Fish's story-telling ability and strong visual imagery allows the listener to relive one's youth. With Mari0ion's classic and progressive rock influences, Misplaced Childhood is about childhood in its simple charm and utterly compelling at its climax.
