The Center is located in Boston at Northeastern University. It is approximately one and a half years old and is making strides in both organizing research on the needs and problems of current and former athletes by developing programs to ad- dress these problems. The associate directors of the Center are Richard Lapchick and Tom "Satch" Sanders. They bring plenty of knowledge and experience from the sporting world. _ - - _ . - n _ 7,, L_-I_-‘L_II I--.._A up...“ F___.-M... Lapchick is the son of former basketball legend Joe Lapchick. A number of universities throughout the, United States and Canada, especially cities where profes- sional sports are played, are being contacted to provide this service. It has well known athletes such as Larry Bird, Mike sassy and Bobby Orr go into high schools and talk to the young athletes about the importance of attaining aca- demic achievement in addition to athletic success. They tell the youngsters about the 12,000 to 1 odds on becoming a professional athlete. "The odds are better for a high school athlete to become a doctor or an attorney than a pro athlete," Lapchick emphasizes. "Even the lucky few who beat the odds and make the pros can become victims.
