---TlD-BllZ Local underwriters are tops in Canada The Waterloo County Life Underwriter’s association was named the 1985 top Canadian association, at the Life Underwriters Associa- tion of Canada's annual meeting Jan. 26-28 in Toronto. There are 82 such associations in Canada and they are judged on several aspects including the quality of their education programs, both for the community and tor the members, as well as their fund-raising efforts for local charities. Art Schooley, CLU, President for 1985 received the award on behalf of the Waterloo County Life Underwriters Association at an awards luncheon on Tues. Jan. 28. The Lite Underwriters Association has been granting an award to the top association since 1916 and the National Association is currently made up of 22,000 members. It is only the second time Waterloo County has won the award. in 1985, the Life Underwriters Association of Canada established a pilot project with six associations to raise money for Cystic Fibre sis. At the annual meeting a cheque for $71,000 was presented to Mila Mulroney, honorary chairperson of the National Cystic Fibrosis Association. The program "Santa Sock" is a fund-raising event where store space is donated by a major department store and local life insurance agents sell tickets for a prize of $1,000. in merchandise. With the early success of this program, Waterloo County Life Underwriters are inves- tigating the possibility of establishing a program in Kitchener-Waterloo. Currently, the Life Underwriters Association has an annual Poor Boys' Luncheon with proceeds going to the St. Agatha Children's Village, and are considering expanding their fund-raising efforts to the Santa Sock program in 1986. This popular federal government program contributes a wage subsidy for new, career- related jobs for students. Jobs must last six to eighteen weeks, between May and September. Businesses, municipalities, educational insti, tutions and non-profit organizations are eligi- ble to apply. The level of subsidy varies depending on the applicant. Businesses could be eligible for up to 50 per cent of student wages to a maximum of $3 an hour, while non-profit groups may be eligible for 100 per certCof wages plus some overhead costs.
