Coral Andrews: Chronicle Special "This is a rock and roll Christ- mas party, and this next song is dedicated to every one of you, because we couldn't have had this party without you," screamed bass player Daryl Gray as Kitehener's own man erhood of rock and roll glory, Helix, launched into another thunderous rendition making Centre in the Square an animal house full of party monsters. The party began 10 years ago. Now at its peak, as Helix, those five adventurous rock star ras- cals, now famous worldwide, came home to loyal fans, friends, and family, and made Centre in the Square the last night of a lightning-speed Eastern Canada tour now on the eve of their next album project. Helix hot at Centre homecoming Manic frontman Brian Vollmer didn't disappoint rousing the masses with formidable antics and his familiar somersaults (which he later admitted were a little higher than usual due to the enormous three-tier neon lit plat- form) as Vollmer delivered a maelstrom of vocal energy. The band performed the first side of their current album Long Way to Heaven including the title track, Ride the Rocket, The Kids Are All Shakin' about freedom in the U.S.A. as opposed to other cultures, and the' frenzied “nurse on Fire, which did just that to the fan morale. From their bygone days Helix has spiralled in whirlwind strater " from selling their first inde pendent album on the ll and S label, to international concert fame, with five main videos, continuing vinyl success and even a Juno nomination for group of the year, album of the year which has guaranteed them long-deserved recognition in their own country. The response was warm and predictable when Vollmer asked the hometown contingent if they remembered an album entitled No Rest for the Wicked, their first I983 Capital release, Hardcore Helix buffs were treated to a sizzling version of Heavy Metal Love, The bash proceeded as Helix displayed another dimension, a property of the band which has exposed them to other genres of music fans, with power rock ballads Without You (written for Brian's daughter Jasmine), old Foot in Cold Water remake Make Me Do Anything You Want, and the dramatic Deep Cuts the Knife, featuring Vollmer's pow- erful and piercing stage person- Lead guitar "Doctor" Doemer in a daringly risque fish-net and leather concoction accentuated with 'flesh' seams literally be- came devil's advocate (with plastic horns provided) as he played a series of Hace rippling' leads, and he and Gray ran along the rims of the Centre boxes to Reichter scale reaction.
