PAGE 28 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1985 Richard O‘Brien Chronicle Staff Is there anybody out there who could have predicted that Uniâ€" versity of Waterloo hockey Warâ€" riors would be frontrunners in the Ontario Universities Athletic Association season? Depending on the outcome of tonight‘s game between Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and Uniâ€" versity of Toronto Blues, Warâ€" riors could be alone in first place over the Christmas break. A win by Golden Hawks would tie them with Warriors with 19 points each and they would have « better claim on first place for raving played two less games. But whether Warriors end up mone in first place or tied, they {ur and away exceed the expecâ€" tations of Warrior coach Don MicKee, who took over this seaâ€" son when Jack Birch became an assistant coach of the New York Rangers of the NHL. Hurdles coach teaching Swedes "I just went on the fact that we knew we had to do a little recruiting," said McKee. ‘"We don‘t think we‘re a great team. We think we‘re a competitive team and we have to work and work to be great." Kâ€"W Track and Field Club coach Brent McFarlane is in Sweden teaching an advanced hurdle course to 50 Swedish coaches. Jamie McKee, a recruit wha‘s no relation to the coach, scored twice in Hamilton. Steve Linâ€" seman, their bestâ€"known recuit, added a single goal. Other scorers were John Goodman, John Dietrich and Dave Cole. McKee hadn‘t seen much uniâ€" versity hockey the previous seaâ€" son but he knew what had to be done. McFarlane is also in Sweden to do a practical clinic for 15 of that country‘s top athletes. Warriors continued working on the weekend, defeating Guelph Gryphons 6â€"4 Friday night at Columbia Icefield before beating McMaster Marauders 6â€"3 in Hamilton on Saturday. Warriors have one exhibition game before starting up the second half of the OUAA schedâ€" ule in January. "Nobody expected us to be 421 and when we set our goals we would have been very pleased o play .500 hockey,." said McKee. Invited by the Swedish governâ€" ment and their sports federation for track and field, McFarlane left Friday for Stockholm. He returns Sunda . Dec. 8. Todd Coulter scored twice in Friday‘s win, as did Jay Green. Scott Dick and Linseman each added one goal. He has coached 14 Canadian champions and over 50 provincial chamâ€" pions including those at the allâ€"Ontario high school level. Hockey Warriors keep on proving it‘s not a fluke On Friday, Dec. 27 they host the Ontario 17â€"andâ€"under team and that is another team McKee coaches. Randy Nesbitt, Warrior forward Jamie McKee celebrates a goal against Guelph before learning it was disallowed. But McKee and his teammates have had many opportunities to celebrate goals that counted.
