PAGE 28 - WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER Pr. 1985 on Banton's ' Shorthanded goal Hockey Hawks sweep past Vees MUSICAL cumsmns Richard O'Brien Chronicle Staff Wilfrid Laurier hockey Golden Hawks got a significant contribution from one of their penalty killers in two wins over Laurentian Voyageurs over the weekend in Sudbury. Dave Banton had the winning goal on a Shorthanded effort Sunday as Hawks won 7-5. Saturday, he had another Shorthanded goal as Hawks won 11-3 in the first game of the weekend. The wins put Hawks in first place in the Ontario Universities Athletic Association with a 7-0-1 won-lost-tied record. They share top spot with York Yeomen and University of Waterloo Warriors but they have two games-in-hand on both teams. Hawks_used two sets of forwards for penalty killing. Peter Black teams up with Jeff Jones and Bob Dean and Banton make up the other unit. "They're all good skaters," said Laurier coach Wayne Gowing. "We like them to use their skating and try and disrupt the other team's power play as much as possible. Banton's winner, his second goal of the game, came at 13: 42 of the third period and Shawn Reagan added the insurance goal at 18:31. Terry McCutcheon had scored earlier to put Hawks into a 5-5 tie. "We like to forecheck while penalty killing to the point where (the other team) can't even set up." Eric Calder, Doug Marsden and Beric Sykes also scored for Hawks. Brent Kelleher had two for Laurentian and single goals went to Phil Landsry, Rick Koritko and Steve White. Marsden, Reagan and Dave Aitchison each scored twice in the first game, which was a penalty-filled match that saw five fighting majors assessed to each team. THEME DISPLAYS Richard O'Brien Chronicle' Staff If Waterloo Siskins have some easy.games in the Midwestern Junior B Hockey League, let it be said that they're also easy on themselves in at least one way. They don't have to work hard in shorthanded situations as often as last year because they're taking fewer penalties. Siskins took just eight minor penalties compared to seven for the visitors in a 14-4 romp over Listowel Cyclones Sunday night at the Waterloo arena. One night earlier, Siskins again took just eight minors, with an additional fighting major and game misconduct to Jeff Sittler, in a 5-2 win over the visiting Elmira Sugar Kings. It's hard to beat some of the weaker teams in a league that has an obvious imbalance, but discipline helps. "We're taking smart penal- ties," said Siskin coach Ross Yantzi. "We're not taking many stupid penalties any more. "The first two games we lost (to Elmira Sugar Kings and to Stratford Cullitons) we were always in the penalty box and it's had to score Shorthanded goals all night. "I told the players if they're going to take penalties they may as well sit on the bench." Siskins now have a 15-3-0 re- cord, good for second place in the league behind Stratford Cul|i- tons. Sunday, Siskins feasted on Cyclones, scoring six third period goals as they weren't always closely watched in front of the net. Fewer penalties make Siskins' lives easier Steve Aebersold, Scott McCul- loch and Dominic Niro each scored twiee in the rout. Single goals went to Dan Ridsdale, Bill Kuchma, Mike Barbeau, Dean DeSilva, Roger Carlaw, Paul Gehl, Dale Roth and Rich Goode. Goode came up from the Wa- terloo midgets along with Dave Godwin. The two forwards were replacing Sittler, who was tiUS- pended as a result of his alterca- tion Saturday night, and Al Kim- mel. J.P. Courette and Dan Gilchrist had Cyclones" first two goals.
