This movement working for the past two years to achieve peace in Central America is encouraging the Canadian govâ€" ernment to take steps toward peaceful negotiations and obâ€" serve Canada‘s continuing inâ€" volvement in Nicaragua. Maggie Schnarr Chronicle Staff Last month a Witness for Peace Canadian delegation jourâ€" neyed throughout Nicaragua obâ€" serving military activities and gathering information on the many aspects of Nicaraguan life. Now, the group is ‘witnessing‘ their experiences back home and compiling a report they will submit to the Canadian governâ€" ment. The continued presence of Witâ€" ness for Peace groups in war zones has reduced attacks on civilians, according to a recent news report. The purpose of Witness for Peace is threefold;, first they wish to maintain a nonâ€"violent presence in Nicaragua. Secondly, by speaking with victims of the war and governâ€" ment officials, the delegation can better ascertain the political atmosphere thus enabling them to make effective recommendaâ€" tions for peace to parliament upon their return. Carman Albrecht, a delegate and spokesman for Witness for Peace said Canada has held a consistently neutral stand reâ€" garding Nicaragua but hopes the report will trigger a more active involvement in government.
