Chronicle Special University of Waterloo rugby Warripors are champions once again. â€" â€" â€" o Warriors took their second Ontario Universities Athletic Association title in three years by defeating University of Western Ontario Mustangs 16â€"12 in a nerve wracking game that was decided in the sixth overtime period. Warriors started off the scoring early in the first half when Paul Toon kicked a threeâ€"point penalty goal but Mustangs came back with a threeâ€"pointer of their own. Waterloo‘s forwards, led by Tony Stea, dominatâ€" ed in the racks and mauls but poor field conditions allowed Mustangs to recover in time to prevent overlaps. . Play continued to go up and down the field as both sides played with tremendous determination to overcome each other and deal with the sea of mud that covered the field. 3 Tremendous support play by flankers Blair Falconer and John Sadler and number eight Paul Toon kept the Western backs from mounting any scoring threat. As the second half wore on it appeared Waterloo was starting to take control of the game, but Mustangs rose to the occasion and a blind side run from a maul resulted in a Western try which was converted to leave Warriors on the short end of a 9â€"3 score. But with only a few minutes remaining, winger Paul Colburn linked up with Stea, who ran 20 yards through three Western tacklers to score beside the goalpost. Late in the first overtime half a costly Mustang penalty resulted in a penalty kick by Toon which put Warriors up 12â€"9. _ Mustangs attempted to win the game quickly with threeâ€"point drop kicks whenever they got within 30 yards of the Waterloo goal as Warrior forwards Doug Paul, Mack Clayton, Allan Philips, Malcolm Gilchrist, Stea, Falconer, Toon and Sadler had effectively shut down their running game. This left the final to be decided by fiveâ€"minute sudden death halves until the game was over. By this time the mud was ankleâ€"deep and sweater markings were indistinguishable. _ _Warriors continued their game plan of grinding it out in the racks and mauls in order to wear down the Mustangs. â€" In the fourth fiveminute overtime, Warriors were rewarded for their determination when Gilchrist rolled off a maul and flipped a pass to secrum half Harold Godwin. Godwin punted the ball downfield and Jay Donovitzevy tore the ball out of the hands of a Western back, ran over a wouldâ€"be tackler into the endzone. The game concluded with 200 Warrior fans rushing onto the field to congratulate Warriors, who were exhausted after three hours of play.
