PAGE 26 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1985 And remember how talk of a rematch between the two teams started almost at once? Well, the rematch will come to pass Saturday in London as the two teams compete for the Yates Cup, the trophy that goes to the Ontario Universi ties Athletic Association champion. Richard O ‘Brien Chronicle Staft Remember October 12, that dark rainy Saturday when Wilfrid Laurier football Golden Hawks lost their only game of the season, a 225 setback to Western Mustangs in London? ‘‘*We got good and dirty (in the loss to Western),"" said coach Rich Newbrough, "and it was a bit of a shock. I think it paid dividends today. Also at stake will be the right to advance to the Atlantic Bowl the following Saturday, the next step on the way to qualifying for the Vanier Cup game Saturday, Nov. 30 in Toronto Hawks made the rematch possible with a 27â€"10 win over York Yeoman in one OUAA semiâ€"final game while Mustangs were beating Guelph Gryphons 39â€"15 in another. Hawks®‘ loss to Mustangs came the first time they had to play in really bad weather this season, but they‘ve looked better offensively while winning football games the past two Saturdays on dog day afternoons . ‘"‘That‘s not bad offence we had out there. And I thought Ken Evraire did a good job punting the ball and both centres did a good job punting the ball." And even if Hawks‘ recent wins in bad weather came over the lowly University of Waterloo Warriors and a Yeoman club that was hampered by injuries, they‘ve cut down on turnovers. Saturday, they lost the ball just once on a fumble and once on an interception. Quarterback Mike Wilson, for one, is optimistic about his team‘s chances. "I think we can take them," said Wilson. ‘"We had a poor offensive day (last time). Now‘s the time for a ... Rematch! Rainey kicked converts on both touchdowns and added a 32â€" vard field goal before halftime Yeoman gained further momentum when Doâ€" minic Cugliari intercepted a Wilson pass to set up a 26â€"yard field goal by Boyd. Making use of good blocking, Paul Nastasiuk ran 62 yards on 11 carries from the tailback position He also caught three passes for 27 yards. Hawks remain ranked number two nationally behind the number one ranked Mustangs. Game time for this battle of the leaders in London is 1 Yeoman quarterback Tino lacono didn‘t play until the second half due to a shoulder injury. Backup quarterback Glen Humenik suffered an injury in the first quarter and gave way to Tom Price. But Yeoman soon lost the momentum in a rash of penalties and Hawks‘ came through with the final touchdown as Dave Lovegrove turned an intercep tion into a 17â€"yard touchdown "The offensive line had it‘s best game of the season (today). Paul Nastasiuk had a big game and the offensive line was a big reason for that." Hawks scored enough to win with a big 20 point second quarter that started with a 35 yard field goal by Steve Rainey on the first play But the Yeoman offence picked up when lacono threw a sevenâ€"yard touchdown pass to Bob Harding that was converted by Mike Boyd in the third quarter. The teams took 10 penalties each, with Hawks losing 100 yards and Yeoman losing 91. Ken Evraire caught an 18 yard touchdown pass from Wilson, who later ran for another major on a fiveâ€"yard keeper Wilson completed 13 of 25 passes for 160 yards and Joe Nastasiuk, his leading receiver, caught three passes for 66 yards. Yeoman passers completed nine of 24 attempts for 68 yards and had a net offence of just 90 yards compared to Laurier‘s 283. Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks outside linebacker Dave Kohler (76) falls on a loose bail (above). Below, Laurier bail carrier Dave Favot is all tied up by a York Yeomen tackler during Saturday‘s game.
