Which is a shame really, because Friedman, along with obscure fellow Texan Joe Ely, is one of the most gifted songwriters anywhere. Friedman‘s forte is his ability to diagnose the every day madness that surrounds us and to relate these experiences in his own clever way. Whether it be the idiosyncrasies of the fashionâ€"conscious or a killer on a rampage, he always seems to know what makes people tick. But what makes Friedman so special is the fact his anecdotes range from the serious and humorous to cynical and downright tasteless. Who else could regale us with the ‘"Ballad of Charles Whitman"‘ and in the same breath, "Sold American", a touching tale of a cowboy star on the down and out (both from Sold American). As difficult as it is to locate his records, they are available through mail order. Write: Sunrise Records, P.O. Box 9157, Austin, Texas. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble Soul to Soul Epic For reasons unknown, Vaughan remains content to ape the guitarâ€"heroics of those who have had the biggest influence on his own style; namely, Clapton, Hendrix and Johnny Winter. He continues to impress with the pyrotechnics but once again, has done little to show he has any ideas of his own. Lacking any vision or passion in his playing, the standard blues songs belie the album‘s title and technical merit aside, amount to nothing more than lacklustre mimicry. > If and when Vaughan the impersonator becomes Stevie Ray Vaughan, he may have something to say. Until that time comes, he will remain a promising artist.
