Coral Andrews Chronicle Special Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) is the typical 1980s cog in the automation wheel. He‘s a comâ€" puter programmer who enjoys his cushy New York highrise existence, but craves a little social excitement once in a while. When Hackett decides to visit the ultraâ€"fashionable suberb Soho, he almost loses his New York state of mind when he meets the mysterious but madâ€" cap Marcie (Rosanna Arquette) in a nonâ€"descript coffeeshop. Hackett spends one of the wildest nights of his life, scramâ€" bling in and out of the New. York alleyway maze, as he experiâ€" ences an extremely bizarre chain of events, that could only happen in your wildest nightmares in After Hours. It couldn‘t happen to a nicer guy. After Hours directed by Martin Scorsese (King of Comedy, Ragâ€" ing Bull, Taxidriver) is a flippant offâ€"theâ€"cuff, New York side street comedy of errors that caters to the eccentric side of the funnybone. This little wit gem, is intended not to appeal to the masses, but to the "comedy select‘. FLORIDA Movie review blond bombastic Mr. Softee iceâ€" cream employer, who heads a vigilante raid against Hackett, when everyone mistakes him for the thief, due to cireumstantial evidence. Marcie, coyly tells Hackett, about her roommate‘s cream cheese and bagel plaster of paris paperweights to lure him over for the night, and Hackett seizes this appetizing opportunity with relish. HMackett first meets Kiki (Linda Fiorentino) who knows she has a great body, and is a pseudoâ€"punk conceptual artist, Marcie‘s roommate who lives in this chic warehouse Soho loft. Horst is her whipâ€"andâ€"chain pal, who ties her the Mrs. up three times a week, for someâ€" thing to do. Hackett, not sure what he‘s gotten himself into, decides to leave after discovering Marcie‘s books about burn reconstruction, hearing tense whispering, and feeling completely off keel about this whole situation becoming accutely suspicious of Marcie‘s intentions. Scorsese and writer Joseph Minion (but he‘s not one), find every available chance to poke fun at life from a New York perâ€" spective. They calmly depict husband andâ€"wife double murder squabâ€" bles, the punk Netherworld, the cockiness of New York cabbies, and everyone‘s general indif ference to suicide, sexual prefer ence and the lost art of conversaâ€" tion. The ending to ‘this not ready for primeâ€"time spoof makes perfect sense. But if you are looking for obvious laugh clues, After Hours is not for you. Scorsese‘s New â€" York, New York, satire, is purposely deâ€" signed for those who prefer wit between the lines. hï¬pflywnflflnwrfluo. «s 1E INTERSECTIO® mg I CHRISTMAS MALL HOI L Mondayâ€"Saturday 930 a WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY.
