PAGE 14 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1985 Maggie Schnarr Chronicle Staff As part of an awareness program sponsored by the Global Community Centre in Waterloo, about 60 representatives from third world countries and war zones will be touring Southwestern Ontario for two weeks this fall. The International Youth Peace and Justice tour will travel in about 10 groups to public and secondary schools. Visitors from El Salvador, Chile, South Africa, Gautemala and East Timor will openly discuss their acutely different lifestyles, giving personal testimonies before the audiences. Program animator Ian Barhydt at Global, said an amateur theatre troupe from Montreal will be accompanying the visitors during the tour, providing skits prior to the presentations by the groups. That is why for the past 12 years, the Global Community Centre‘s main function has been to act as a development and education agency in the region. Barhydt realizes that Third World issues are usually difficult to address because they "reflect very much on how we (Canadians) live as a society." e Studios located in most larger Sears retail stores Check your local store for days and hours of studio operation Youth Peace and Justice Tour discusses Third World issues PORTRAIT TAKEN THRU NOVEMBER 16. It developed into an educational format because volunâ€" teers at the time felt that just raising money was not good enough, when society‘s consciousness and level of understanding must be raised â€" a longâ€"term goal at the centre said Bester. With four staff members and up to 50 volunteers working on ‘"up to 20 different projects at a time‘" including the recent Third World film festival, the centre is a collective organization where the workers all share equal power and equalized salaries. â€" Barhydt feels this is an fmportant aspect at Gloâ€" bal. Although the centre is used ‘"‘constantly," the focus in future will be on better promotion so more people get to know about them. Barhvdt said. "We‘re dealing with a lot of issues that people are resistant to, because a lot of the time we have to talk about how our lifestyles and our own particular domestic politics and domestic economic practices have an impact on the Third World," he commented.
