Sandrock, 48, is serving his first year of a twoâ€"yearâ€"term as president of the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce. It could be said he is following in his father‘s footsteps. The elder Sandrock was president of the Kitchener Chamber of Commerce approximately 20 years ago. "I‘ve always been community minded," says Sandrock, who is an honorary member of the Kitchener/Conestoga Rotary Club; a member of the Waterloo/Guelph Regional Airport Commission and past director of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. Sandrock, president of Waterloo Bedding Co., his wife Fran and their three children, recently made their home in Waterloo. The Waterloo businessman has been involved with the Chamber for seven years. What prompted him to take an active role in the organization? He says his decision was based on the fact his business is aimed at provincial and national markets and doesn‘t buy or sell much in the local community Sandrock‘s first assignment was to establish and chair the tourism committee He served as chairman of the finance committee for four years and added that "I really kind of felt we (Waterloo Bedding) should be contributing something to the community," Rhe says. To this end he volunteered his services to the Chamber and the latter wasted no time in utilizing his expertise. Stories by Terry James Chamber president shows commitment to his community His role includes serving as official spokesman for the Chamber, providing leadership and, with the assistance of the executive and the board, setting the direction of the Chamber. along with these duties he "always had a lot to say,"" concerning other issues. â€" Speaking of Chamber programs which he is personally keen on, Sandrock said he believes strongly in the benefits of the Junior Achievement program. He believes it is the Chamber‘s responsibility to see these types of programs get the kind of profile and assistance they need. The Chamber president is pleased to see the Chamber is placing more emphasis on government affairs. Sandrock says he appreciates the healthy relationship which exists between the Chamber staff and the City of Waterloo staff ‘‘That‘s an important area," he says. "Government affairs is an all encompassing area where you go right from the municipal scene to the provincial scene to the federal scene. "Council and senior staff have been receptive to new ideas. We look forward to continuing this partnership in the growth of the community." The Chamber of Commerce president said the Chamber always has an open door and not only welcomes, but encourages people to come up with suggestions as to how the Chamber could be of better service to its members and the community.
