Critics and viewers alike have coined the phrase Year of the Dragon in reference to this disappointing effort now at the Capitol. True to its name, Cimino‘s latest bomb drags on and on and on ... Mickey Rourke (from ‘84 movie sleeper Pope of Greenwich Village) plays hardâ€"boiled ‘Bronx Pollack‘ cop, Captain Stanley White, who is sent into New York‘s exotic Chinatown to literally clean up the mess of recent gangwars. A firstâ€"generation Polishâ€"American who served in the Vietnam war (this fact is rammed down the viewer‘s throat) he‘s convinced secret Triads still operate in Chinatown in connection with the Mafia. In stubborn unsympathetic style White goes for the Chinatown jugular, determined to expose Chinese Mafia ‘don‘ Joey Tai, a ruthless heroin dealer and extortionist posing as a wellâ€"toâ€"do restaurant entrepreneur, and business tycoon. â€" Like the Godfather, Year of the Dragon is ultraâ€"violent with ‘slowmo‘ bullets in all the right body parts, and a bloodbath that makes Helter Skeiter and the Manson slayings a mere puddle in comparison. _ Year of the Dragon could have been a classic thriller, but the plot is not cohesive, and the film which begins at a breakâ€"neck pace slows to a tedious vein, as White the crusader Coral Andrews Chronicle Special Director Michael ‘Heaven‘s Gate Cimino has done it again. He‘s singleâ€"handedly conceived another boxâ€"office turkey, a modified Chinese Godfather entitled Year of the Dragon. Vogue modelâ€"turned actress Ariane, as television reporter Tracy Tsu, should reseek model status. Simply, her role as Tsu is flat. The Chinese beauty can‘t act her way out of a bowl of wonâ€"ton soup. She illustrates White‘s siege against the Triad through exceedingly unrealistic television coverage. Confucius say, Cimino lose face as director, has lost yearn for boxâ€"office yen. The focus of the movie is lost between White‘s personal vendetta with himself and the vendetta he vents against Tai and the Chinese sector. Rourke does his utmost to salvage this part, which is just too monotonous for this usually brilliant method actor, similiar to a cocky Robert De Niro, or streetwise Dustin Hoffman. ‘Diner‘s diamondâ€"in theâ€"ruff can‘t cut the chopâ€" sticks, and most of the fire in Dragon ignites from White‘s constantly profane outbursts. Based on a novel by Robert Daley with screenplay adapted by Oliver Stone and Michael Cimino, White loses everything he cares about in this oneâ€"man hunt, and it is all terrifically futile. The Chinese community is not wellâ€"represented, the Triad members construed as cheap twoâ€"bit hustlers, rather than shrewd business types. o John ‘Iceman‘ Lone is convincing as Triad leader Joey Tai, but the plot does not sustain his chilling character. rants and raves about the injustices of the police system I~ THE YX (ARE Prces mc utes S0¢ CBS wz harge Bor Office Mourt Viea Toll Free (519 area) 1â€"800â€"265â€"8977 Tochets purchased by phone and T.chet outiets wre sebject in a service charge Atse at Bass & TicheiAgencies MasterCard American Erpress tham 6 gm WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1985 â€" PAGE 15 BIG APVENTUVRe THE STORY OF A REBEL AND HIS BIKE.
