1(69 Drew‘s home is dissected and bugged to such proportion, that the bathroom becomes a prime comic prop, with the pipes gummed up the water redirected through the shower and the toilet for Coleman‘s men find the most incredible circumstantial evidence against Drew, and this along with several slapstick comic routines, whose timing is impeccable, make Red Shoe a bit of wonderfullyâ€"sophisticated ‘soleful‘ wit. Tom Hanks (left) plays an innocent musician caught up in a bizarre conspiracy to the confusion of his best friend Morris played by Jim Belushi. He is a concert violinist, deeply offâ€"the wall, and totally oblivious to the chaos about to surround his immediate environment. ’-----------. PAGE 18 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 1985 While walking through Washington Dulles airport, Richard Drew is suddenly stalked by two opposing teams of agents. Durning has led Coleman to believe that Drew can actually testify to his illegal drug activities and have him put away for life. Coleman has 48 hours to eliminate Drew. Of course, Richard Drew is just a regular runâ€"ofâ€"theâ€" mill type who lost his virginity to a nurse while suffering from a year‘s bout of bronchitis. Yet Richard Drew (Tom Hanksâ€"Splash, Bachâ€" elor Party) becomes the unwitting pawn in a game of superâ€"intelligence (although this is questioned constantly) in The Man with One Red Shoe, now at Frederick Mall Cinema. Red Shoe is a political highâ€"stakes chess game between CIA director (Charles Durning) and his despicable archâ€"foe Cooper, played by Dabney Coleman, who is fast becoming one of the screens favorite comic ‘baddies." Richard Drew works for the CIA and he doesn‘t even know it. No, he‘s not a relation to famed adolescent sleuth Nancy Drew. In fact, likely the closest he‘s ever come to the word spy is reading Spy vs Spy comics in Mad magazine. The Belushi brother has the same uncontrollable urge to go over the edge within limits, and RKed Shoe will make Belushi number two a star in his own right. Hanks and a topnotch supporting cast has transposed One Red Shoe into one of ‘85s more succéssful remakes. dnlnannmnnan h aenF uen epppnnapamaagnmm But it‘s Tom Hanks as central comic force Richard Drew, that makes Red Shoe a perfect fit. With his selfâ€"absorbed ‘what me worry‘ attitude, Hanks blunders through all the espioâ€" nage mayhem like a naughty little school boy. Red Shoe could be defined reflexâ€"action laughter," and tifully. On the other foot, Red Shoe introduces another inspiring comic genius. Directed by Stan Dragoti (Mr. Mom. Love At First Bite) and written by Frances Veber and Yves Robert, Red Shoe is filled with delightful nuances. Everything that happens to Drew happens for a reason, and acts as a support system for a next series of gags. When all else fails, Coleman brings in the ultimate weapon. The girl. Maddy the seductress, is played by tail, cool, calm and collected Lori Singer (Footloose), who slinks across her apartment like a lioness after its prey, in one of Red Shoe‘s funniest moâ€" ments. Coleman studies Drew‘s music trying to decipher secret messages as he connects Drew‘s violin solo to a defenseâ€"system computer‘ ‘"After all, what are the chances of the Russians attacking on Thursday night," he sneers. uproarious results. Hanks does the immortal shampoo serenade as he brushes his teeth with shampoo and his performance bubbles across the screen. C1 1 j i ‘:n.
