These administrative responsibilities took him away from the track during the 19h0's, "My weight ballooned to 238 pounds No I dieted down to 19tt before taking up running at a Toronto Y [was soon running about 2 miles a day By 1972 I was jogging ten miles a week regularly at the Waterloo Y." Coughlin said A hero who inspired his efforts at that point was Panto Nurmi, the world class Norwegian runner Coughlin. who resides with wife Catherine in the Village on the Green complex in Waterloo says he has always been active, A native of England he excelled in short distance track events in public and high schools, During the two and one half )ears of British Navy seaman duty he boxed and played rugger - skills he put to playing and coaching use at University of Toronto in the 1930's, “Dad trained the thrve of us from an early age to use our hands capatrly." he chuckled His boyhood sports hero was Jack 19vmpstsy "it's an amazing accomplishment for a man of any age," remarked Ken Brooks, adult program coordinator at Waterloo Family Y. "During I983 he would often start at 7 a.m. to get his five daily miles in. When he was closing in on his goal of 1,000 miles, we would see him running two or three times a day just to maintain his pave." Last year he stepped up his participation at the Waterloo Y, pushing his trim 173 pound frame to a personal best - 1,300 miles. A special "Y" plaque in his living room attests to his 1984 accomplishment. Dan Coughlin likes to keep busy - it's been a lifelong habit. As the first Director of Probations in Ontario he travelled 35,000 miles a year from 1953-60 to set up the province's original Family and Juvenile Court System. Now retired, the 71-year-old Coughlin still logs lots of road mileage. In 1983, as a senior member of the Waterloo YMCA Health Club he jogged 1,000 miles along Waterloo streets, avenues and pathways. Ilis best mileage - L300 miles in 19trt - obviously required drive and dedication. But he knows when to take a time-out loo. "Dan shows up here every day ol the week," said Gwyn Redford who works at the Waterloo Y office. "and he's never too busy to pop in and say hello and tell you another story". (The fact that he is Irish may explain part of that! ). Coughlin decided to slow down a little bit this year. He had to leave extra time for his responsibilities as president of the Waterloo Senior Kiwanis Club.
