4 Gold elusive In Etobicoke Ililllt PAGE 34 - WATERLOO Mm. WEDNESDAY, mellow O'Brtqrt Chronicle, Staff If gold is where you find it, as the saying goes, most local track and field athletes were looking for it in the wrong place Friday and Saturday. , - Ken Collins of KCl won the senior boys Javelin event at the all-Ontario meet ln Etobicoke with a throw of 62.6 metres but he was the only local win- ner. Mike Cowan of Wa- terloo collegiate scored a third place finish in the Junior boys long lump with a personal best distance of 6.72 metres and placed fifth in the triple jump at 13.19. against stiff competi- tion and there were record-setting perfor- mances in both events but he felt he could have placed higher in the triple jump if he hadn't faulted by a few centimetres on one of his tries. “My second last jump would have been good for about sec ond." said Cowan. "My third jump just snuck me into the top eight and the last one put me in fifth." Throughout the high school track and field season Cowan had made personal best distances. Paula Schwan, also of WCl. was fourth in the midget girls 3.000 in a personal best time of 10:42 and Gavin Kerr ran to a respectable eighth place finish in one heat of the midget boys 3.000, WCl hurdler Allison Bryant missed compe- tition at the Ontario level due to a foot inju- rv. Paul Neuman of Laurel Vocational School ran in one heat of the open boys 2,000 sleeplechase but didn't qualify for the final. Also not qualifying for the final in their respective events were St. John‘s-Kilmarnoclt athletes Chris Wood (junior boys 400) and Dave Hombough (sen- ior boys 41t0 and mo.) Lisa Kueneman of Bluevale was seventh in the senior girls zoo and also failed to quali- ty for the final in the Bluevale's midget boys relay team ran a personal best time of 47.3 but that wasn't good enough to qualify for thed1nais. Bluevale coach Doug Carmichael had higher hopes for the senior girls 4x1tt0 team, but a dropped baton on the second exchange of their heat ended their hopes Dropped batons were the order of the day during Friday after- noon heats as runners suffered from a bad case of the jitters. "I think there was about one (dropped baton) per relay," said Carmichael.
