(First of a weekly review of records by freelance entertainâ€" ment writer Ross MacDonald.) ° Dire Straits/Brothers in Arms Once upon a time there was a talented, albeit unknown British musician. He had a voice like Dylan and hands like Clapton. When the two got together, the results were often wonderful, a kind of oddball melting pot of blues, rock, jazz and folk. A good A&R man is quick to recognize a nugget and it wasn‘t long before radio stations and record collectors followed suit. As is so often the case, the guy becomes big, real big, perhaps too big for his own good. DJ‘s play him to death and trade magazines inundate us with glossies and philosophies. And before you can say list of $7.98, Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits are synonymous with platinum. Mr. Knopfler becomes rich, very rich, but perhaps, not rich enough. He quickly patents the formula and millions come to trust the Dire Straits trademark. It is easily recognized as the designer line of fine recording and polished licks, as close to perfect as perfect can But with each subsequent reâ€" cording, a love/hate relationship is festering amongst the faithful who pine for the lean and mean days of the late 70‘s. Dire Straits is now a misnomer, any trace of desperaâ€" tion practically null and void. Stereo connoisseurs marvel at the craftsmanship; the old guard are appalled at the generic qualities that pervade the music. With Brothers in Arms, Knopfler has succeeded, or more approâ€" priately perhaps, succumbed to his obsession of producing the perfect BRYCE BANTING Difficult access may require additional charge PRICE INCLUDES: Jacuzzi sand filter, stainiess steel 3 step ladder, deluxe quality vacuum set and maintenance set (wall brush, thermometer, leaf net, etc.) a 2¢ wide reâ€"bar reinforced concrete deck completely around pool, 2 stage poured concrete bottom with lifetime warranty, a 30 mil plain or patterned liner with 20 year warranty and 14 gauge walls with extra heavy Z700Medcoothqmali‘flimecorro.ionmm ‘We Will Better The Best Price You Can Find On The Same Pool® 19133‘ Kidney 17133‘ Oval HAND POOLS or 16132‘ Indoor Showroom with Full Size Pools on Dispiay 550 Park side Drive at Weber, Waterioo 5© 886â€"3 792 nmniinfraliiet ind »9 brrcrinandbt $ to ¢ s purchasers. This may well be the stateâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"art standard for years to come. Every person who ever owned a BMW or Audi will have it on his Walkman. It will become the number one pointâ€"ofâ€"sale marketâ€" ing tool for speaker salesman everywhere. And yes, Mark Knopfler will add another notch to his money belt. From a musical standpoint, Larry Gowan represents someâ€" what of a dichotomy. On stage he is the impish, skittish punk, a Queen St. W. refugee in every respect, from the cockatoo coifâ€" fure to the latest in new wave threads. Gowan/Strange Animal But it is the marriage of arena rock and new wave sensibilities which is steering this bar circuit veteran towards international stardom. On record, he is anything but, and the repetoire suggests that Gowan would probably feel more at home at the Gardens than say the Bamboo Club. With a vocal style and range similar to a Chris de Burgh/John Anderson hybrid and complex rhythm patterns and arrangeâ€" ments that owe a debt to Peter Gabriel (the album lineup features former Gabriel alumni), there isn‘t a bad track on the album. Several of the cuts are memoraâ€" ble as the easily recognizable melodies never give way to the needless noodling that often hampers projects such as this. FM and AM stations alike are giving cuts such as ‘"Cosmetics‘"‘ and *‘*‘Criminal Mind*"‘ considerable airplay and as a result, Larry Gowan would appear to be this year‘s unlikely hero.
