Non-violence Is a powerful and just weapon which cuts without wounding. It is a sword that heals." Coral Andrews _ Chronicle Special Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream. He wanted to make all men free, regardless of race, color or creed through the teachings and influences of a non-violence doctrine. Like the great Spiritualist leader Gandhi, King dedicated his life to the search for peace in the world and within oneself. Carmichael Gallery, 14 King St. N. in Waterloo, has opened a summer location in Stratford, on York Street overlooking the river across from the tourist information building. This gallery will give visitors to Stratford a chance to see and collect works of our many Waterloo County artists. The Waterloo Gallery will remain open for the summer at its usual hours. On April 4, 1968, at age 39, Dr. King's thoughts, candid observations. and universal inspiration were forever silenced by an assassin's bullet. June features fabric folk art of the Hmong of Laos (now living in Waterloo). July will be a group show of the gailery's most popular ar- lists. ' . Based on the words and wisdom of Martin Luther King, Skin Deep did not attempt to answer or justify man's cruel unjust behavior, but simply reminded everyone that this problem is rapidly increasing. As King once stated, “It is more honorable to walk in dignity than ride in humiliation." When the enraged black collective of Alabama arranged a bus boycott, America was forced to sit up and take notice, as the incident achieved national prominence, and Black Movement was rumbling with the slogan 'We Shall Overcome.' The local Calvary Players demonstrated the warmth. spirit, conviction and faith of Dr. King, friend and spiritual guide Rev. Ralph Aber. nathy, and King's beloved wife Coretta. with moving vignettes of King's rise to black power, interspersed with distinctive Gospel hymns and prayers. The play finale was a tender refrain of the black movement anthemWe Shall Overcome, featuring the cast holding hands in an aura of loge and understanding.
