He found himself looking down the barrel of a long lens on the far side of the pit. The Waterloo collegiate athlete just turned to Viking teammate Tom Berthin and pointed. Mike Cowan was waiting for his first attempt in the second round of long jump competition when he noticed something. Some athletes might find that unnerving, but for Cowan it was just a reason to try harder as he competed in the junior boys event at the Central Western Ontario high school track and field meet Thursâ€" day in Brantford. "I said to Tom, ‘Look, he‘s got the camera down there,‘ " said Cowan. ‘*Anything like that helps." Cowan‘s next jump turned out better than the picture as he spanned 6.59 metres â€" about a centimetre short of the CWOSSAA record â€" to win his second event of the day and become the junior boys overall winner. ‘"I was never thinking of the record," said Cowan. "I think someâ€" one told me (the record distance) a little way through it but I was happy with my 6.59."‘ Last year Cowan won the long jump with a leap of 6.28 and was best in the triple jump in 12,69. He also did better in the triple jump this year, winning with a 13,15 metre distance. Cowan was also entered in the 400 metre event, but failed to qualify for further competition at the regional meet Friday and Saturday at Cenâ€" tennial Stadium in Kitchener. ‘"It (400) just wasn‘t there," said Cowan. "I just didn‘t have the mental attitude. I don‘t know how to express it but something just wasn‘t Cowan was the only double winner from WCI or Bluevale and is one of C Cowan‘s not cameraâ€"shy at CWOSSA Cowan‘s junior boys teammate Elias Mulamutil has qualified for the 200 and 400 events and Berthin is entered in the long jump. 35 athletes from the two schools who is advancing to the regional compeâ€" tition. es Bluevale Knights also had a junior boys winner as Andreas Mitterer won the discus with a distance of 43.60 metres that was a personal best. Knights Dan Pride also qualified in junior boys javelin as he finished second with a throw of 44.5. Also in the 100 hurdles will be Knights‘ Mike Schmidt, winner in that event in a personal best time of 14.8 seconds. Randy Roenspiess was another Bluevale midget boys qualiâ€" fier as he finished fourth in the Knights also have three senior boys qualifiers in Kirk daSilva (400), Ron Sprung (200) and Chris Malthaner (pole vault). Rick Wooâ€" ten will compete in the open boys steeplechase along with Paul Neuâ€" man of Laurel Vocational School. Shannon Archer led Bluevale midget girls by winning the javelin event with a toss of 27.81. Diane Babensee qualified in the 800 and Kirsten Byers in the 1,500. WCI‘s Paula Schwan was second in the midget girls 1,500 and 3,000 and Christine Cowan was fifth in the same 3,000 event. Among junior girls, Allison Bryant was second in the 80 metre hurdles and was also second in the open girls 400 event. WCI‘s Melanie Groff qualified in the high jump and Teresa Martineau made the grade in the 800 and Among senior girls, Knights‘ Lisa Kueneman won the 400 in 60.9 and was third in the 200.
