' _ - _--------------------- Runners were off to a wet start in the titth annual May-Ten-Kay Sunday morning. The race started on Lincoln Ave. near Ellis Cr. and finished at Weber St. and Lincoln. Heather Pagan found a dry place under a table of water cups while waiting for the race to and. She won more to hand out cups ot water to the "Mutton. Richard O'Brien Chronicle Staff Those were the words of Susan Stone, winner of the fifth annual May-Ten-Kay Sunday morn- ing. Stone set a new record with a personal best time of 34 minutes. 35 seconds. "Last time I ran in the rain was at the Classic. Waterloo's really known for its bad weather, isn't it?" "It was a good day, I like the rain," said Stone. And indeed, there have been some soggy 10K races held locally in the past: years - A 2ryear-old kinesiology student from Uni- versity of Waterloo, Stone is in the middle of training for a marathon in Minnesota in mid- June. "it's hard to pirak for 10K's if you‘re training for a marathon." "Usually that training isn't conducive to running good 10K's," said Stone, who runs with the Toronto Longboat Club. . _ Stone believed the level of competition in this year's May-Ten-Kay was elevated by runners who chose to pass up an Eaton's-sponsored race in Toronto over the weekend. She had heard in a change room that some runners stayed away from the Toronto event as part of a boycott against the department store chain because Eaton's has been accused of exploiting women. Second place finisher was Tracey Robinson of Guelph, winner of the Waterloo WK Classic two years ago. She finished in 35.35.
