Talent for improvisation _ makes pianist Finch popular Chronicle Special "It‘s interesting. Some people like my interpretation of Brahm‘s Lullaby and some do not. Some see it as an invasion, of a childhood security .‘ o l:iz‘i;l-i;ri)it;l;glas Finch was referring to his Variations on the Theme of Brahms, based on the familiar childhood lullaby . But identification with the infant beddyâ€"bye melody â€"soon vanished after the first few stanzas. Finch‘s ptece sounded like a little child playing around on a piano, with the innocent underlying Brahms sleepyâ€"time theme listeners know and love. Then it changed drastically. Brahms Lullaby transformed to Brahms Nightmare, as Finch pounded out his surrealistic concept, detestable or delectable depending on one‘s individual taste. _ The nine variations which Finch was commissioned to write, and completed in 1984, filled Waterloo‘s capacityâ€"attended Music Room with garish images and eerie dominants of sound. v'l:l-{s_éix sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti were more the usual chamber fare, technically brilliant but lacking in initial spirit. o â€" ## iÂ¥ y The 28â€"yearâ€"old artist who teaches partâ€"time at Toronto‘s * ~â€" PROCLAMATION On behalf of the Council for the City of Waterioo, I hereby prociaim the week of April 20â€"27, 1985 as ‘"*SYMPHONY WEEK®" in honour of the KITCHENERâ€"WATERLOO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Ziegler wants 4OA ECirtped‘ay! Bach and Handel, Finch did his part as he performed six preludes and fugues from Bach‘s Wellâ€" Tempered Clavier Bk. II. These complex and compelling movements displayed Finch‘s overwhelming talent. He was as dramatic as the piece was demanding. The evening highlight was Finch‘s uncanny powers of improvisation, playing such standards as a melodramatic Danny Boy and Marseilles French Anthem (dA la J .S. Bach), when the audience was asked to offer a theme which Finch would then compose on the spot. _â€"Finch amused and awed both peers and admirers, with his daring technique and outlAandish i_nsight.k 8 it Music room member Walter Scholtes presented Finch with a charming sonatina written for piano and clarinet.
