Chronicle Special In the first year, Lulu‘s succeeded with many special ‘one nighters‘ including a jazz night with Salome Bey and Peter Appleyard, The British Invasion, and the first Happy Together Tour. The enormous bar has enjoyed many profitable nights and surprises, but no real disasters to date. As prime public relations man of Lulu‘s, the world‘s largest bar, Kenny Hollis constantly has things on his mind and a nonâ€"stop ringing in his ears. Countless others have drawn capacity crowds, from the country sounds of Tanya Tucker to the pop of Peter Noone, and all the rock and roll nostalgia gang. But Lulu‘s biggest surprise was the response to the Platters and The Drifters. "It freaked me out to see 19â€"toâ€"25â€"yearâ€"old people mouthing the words to all of this classic late ‘50s and early ‘60s material." said Hollis. Coral Andrews Chronicle Special It‘s no surprise, Hollis‘ phone lights up his business life the moment he enters his cluttered office door. Hollis is a jack of all communication trades. He‘s been a booking agent, a promotions manager for two area hotels, and even a bricklayer. His former stint in the rock and roll spotlight, with Copperpenny, was all part of the valued experience Hollis has learned to apply to his demanding position at Lulu‘s. Now that Lulu‘s is one year old, Hollis himself has enjoyed a blockbuster year meeting the who‘s who of the entertainment, past, present. and future. The former leadsinger of Canada‘s Copperâ€" penny has been in the entertainment business so long, he can deal with anyone in any walk of life, from Mayor Dom Cardillo to an inquisitive voice badgering him about Lulu‘s dress code. Around Christmas of ‘84, Lulu‘s owner Karl Magid called Hollis, who fell in love with the idea and philosophy behind Lulu‘s at first sight. He immediately began to help Magid and his team mould Lulu‘s into its presentâ€"day enterâ€" tainment status. Hollis is a workâ€"aâ€"holic and he readily admits it. ‘Lulu‘s has done a lot for this area. It has virtually forced all the other bars, to go for big entertainment value. There is no competition. Lulu‘s has their own defined style. But we have proved that there is a market for international acts, right here in this area." Since the old Highway 8 shopping centre has turned from department store sales to showâ€"biz Las Vegas style, the Kâ€"W area has had a cultural awakening â€" whether it has been ready for it or not. Hollis a driving force behind success of Lulu‘s Loved idea Life is a carnival So the world‘s largest bar could expand into your living room on occasion. Lulu‘s is not at liberty to reveal any more surprises, but like the space capacity, the sky‘s the limit. Lulu‘s has added considerably to their original sound and light capacity, making the quarter of a million dollar technical operations now topâ€"notch and a vast improvement. Television negotiations with CBC and CTV networks are now in progressive stages, with Magid as number one producer in the project. Owner Magid, who occasionally strolls in to Hollis‘ office to check on the latest developâ€" ments, and Hollis have a good working rapport. Magid masterminds all of Lulu‘s future enâ€" deavours and Hollis refines them with veteran booking agent Bill Geffros. Year two promises more of the same. Look for Burton Cummings, and the Beach Boys in the near future, plus a possible modern contemporary act. *‘‘We won‘t do ‘freakâ€"o‘ bands," said Hollis firmly. ‘"The closest we‘d come is the Parachute Club. Remember we have to fill this place with 3,000 people. We haven‘t said no to the modern acts. But, we must maintain a certain commerâ€" cial potential in our showcase of entertainâ€" ment," he said. If Hollis sounds similar to a wellâ€"tailored carnival barker on Lulu‘s centre stage, it‘s because owner Magid wants it that way. To Magid, Lulu‘s is a carnival atmosphere. This accounts for the regular tarotâ€"card reader, stiltâ€"walker, balloonâ€"sellers, shoeâ€"shine boys, endless food stations and the outrageous Captain Canuck with his electronic gadgetry and toys. Who needs the CNE? Lulu‘s also seems to literally be in the ‘big money.‘ Its latest scheme is a funâ€"inâ€"theâ€"sun cruise in the Caribbean, including Jamaica with oldie mouldy faves Ronny Dove and Bobby Curtola, who always do wellâ€"whenever they are at the Roadhouse, and possibly Brenda Lee plus another ‘special guest.‘ At a ridiculous price, Lulu‘s has this trip 25 per cent sold, and expects to sell it out. "I really enjoyed working and getting to know Peter Noone (Herman of the Herman‘s Herâ€" mits). He was the shocker of the year, and a true professional in the business who will definitely have another hit, though his current goal is to get into the movies, because that‘s where the big money is." According to Hollis every act has a story behind it. Good rapport Fun cruise
