PAGE 14 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 1985 Hannah Maddock Chronicle Special My volunteer experience as a oneâ€"toâ€"one worker at Lutherwood, a Children‘s Mental Health centre, is satisfying as well as challengâ€" ing. I help a young teenager enrolled in a junior vocational class two mornings a week. My main goal as a volunteer is to provide friendship and be a trusted confidante for this youth to turn to when necessary. I enjoy the relationship when emâ€" phasis is placed upon developing vital social and emotional skills. The staff, which includes teachâ€" ers, child care workers, chaplain and psychologists are supportive and offer encouragement to the volunteers. The openness and apâ€" proachability of the Lutherwood staff contributes to the success and recognition of the program. Although vocational skills are vital, social skills are greatly emphasized. Importance is placed upon effective communication skills or establishing a feeling of trust in a relationship. The key to being a volunteer at Lutherwood is to show a genuine interest and concern in the goal of the program. Time spent together with the youth must emphasize empathy, underâ€" standing, guidance and discipline. A great deal of use, as a volunteer, is made of the extensive computer system which offers educational and fun games. The computer helps to stimulate interâ€" est, skills and to challenge the student‘s patience while making learning an exciting process. By providing support for your friend, opportunities for discussion occur. I believe it is important to accept the child for what he is. Volunteering depends upon esâ€" tablishing realistic goals and Volunteers are people like you. They come in all sizes, shapes and colours, any age, sex or creed, rich or poor. They are people willing to share the gift of time. They are people looking for opportunities to share, to learn, to grow, to contribute, to make new friends, to tackle new challenges. A volunteer is a person who knows that giving a little can help a lot. Volunteers are unpaid workers who are joined together by a desire to share the responsiblity for others in the community. When talking to the student, it is vital to not be judgmental but rather offer advice in a construcâ€" tivem, yet firm manner. Emphasis is needed for individual developâ€" ment at a level which considers the needs, motivation and goals of the student and Lutherwood. Activities .centre around what the youth finds interesting and enjoys doing. For instance, a game, such as ping pong, can aid in developing a sense of cooperaâ€" tion and consideration for a fellow contemporary. The spirit of winâ€" ning or the defeat of losing can be properly demonstrated. Rf:?tt for the adolescent is anothér vital aspect of the proâ€" gram at Lutherwood. As a volunâ€" teer, I need to consider the feelings of my friend. Sensitivity to the youth‘s needs is important. Posiâ€" tive reinforcement provides the adolescent with a feeling that he is capable of performing on par with others. Respecting both the acâ€" complishments and disappointâ€" ments of the adolescent, creates a feeling of understanding. In discussing volunteering with volunteers, they feel by helping others you help yourself. Your personal growth as an individual is greatly enhanced and reward comes from the feeling of acâ€" complishment in providing a supâ€" port system to an individual in Lutherwood provides an ideal setting for volunteers to demonâ€" strate a caring and sharing attiâ€" tude for individual‘s with specific problems. By expressing a desire to help, whether it be offering math tutoring or an empathetic ear, a sense of persoinal satisfacâ€" tion is gained. 355 Erb W. 885â€"4760 ,;â€"â€" BBBo0 ue EPP AXL TL that alfecr" Waterloo North at Committed to building a better Ontario‘ Outstanding Service at Queen‘s Park e Shadow Cabinet Critic, Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing e Chairman, Caucus Task Force on Property Tax/Assessment â€" e Member, Public Accounts Committee e Member, Procedural Affairs Committee.
