Oldâ€"fashioned g« Now a multiâ€"millionâ€"dollar enterprise, the Piller‘s of today has come a long way from 1957 when it was established in a small Rummelhart butcher shop in Waterioo by current company president Wilheim Huber and his partner George Piller. But it indicates a commitment that Wilhelm, Edward and Henry Huber, plus the employees of Piller‘s Sausages and Delicatessens Ltd. have spent the last quarter decade fulfilling. ‘*We‘re dedicated to producing a high quality product," said Piller‘s vice president Edward Huber ‘‘Our goal is to bring the oldâ€"fashioned goodness and quality of Europe to today‘s market." ‘"In 1959, there were only the three of us; my brothers, my father and one extra," recalled Edward. **While the other four were making our products, I was on the road selling, delivering and finding new customers." Two years later, Piller sold his interest in the venture to the Huber family and a Kâ€"W tradition was born. A testament to their success in this are the prestigious bronze and silver medals the company won in the 1981 and ‘82 International European Food Fair. In fact, Edward pointed out that the Huber family has been in the meat business for four generations, According to Edward, during the past 28 years, there have been 15 additions of Piller‘s now 100,000â€"squareâ€"foot facility. The sixteenth, a 52,000â€"squareâ€"foot expansion containing additional smokehouses, is set to begin next week. **Ours is one of the most modern facilities in Canada," said Edward. ‘"We‘re upâ€"toâ€"date in the industry, the only difference is we may have a little less equipment or smaller equipment." Waterioo Farmer‘s Markets. That situation last long, however, and by 1960, Piller‘s ma included supermarkets and delicatessens in London and Hamilton. Piller‘s growth in sales and staff has been continual, and in 1985, its 120 employees will turn some 10 million pounds of meat into 120 different products. Edward said the company is constantly experimenting with new recipes and product lines to give its customers something for every occasion. Currently, 70 per cent of company sales are in Ontario, but he added, within the next 10 years, Piller‘s will be a fully national enterprise. As well, the Hubers plan to expand its share of the export market and they anticipate exports will comprise 30 per cent of total sales by 1990. beginning in 1880, when their greatâ€"grandfather opened a little butcher shop in Yugoslavia. The fifth generation, Henry‘s and Wilhelm‘s sons, have already taken their places in the family business. *‘*We‘re still using some of the recipes that my greatâ€"grandfather used in Yugoslavia," said Edward.
