PAGE 18 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 1985 Coral Andrews Chronicle Staff "J.S.. Bach was a man unfettered by time and place. His Mass in B Minor is a vision of fulfillment and wholeness, a legacy. It‘s the antithesis of art for art‘s sake," said Kâ€"W Philharmonic Choir conductor Howard Dyck, to a wellâ€"attendâ€" ed Centre in the Square congregation. C0 _ In the triâ€"centennial celebrations of composers Handel and J.S. Bach, the Kâ€"W Philharmonic Choir‘s performance of Bach‘s vast Mass in B Minor was a memorable triumph. For this particular work is one of the most difficult choral challenges a singing ensemble could possibly undertake. Conductor Dyck‘s arrangment provided unique texture through three skillful combinations. First, the four soloists soprano Elizabeth Neufeld, mezzoâ€"soprano Margaret Kuhl, tenor Douglas Robinson, and baritone Daniel Lichti, second the utilization of the 20â€"member Elmer Iseler ensemble, corp of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and the full strength of the Kâ€"W Philharmonic Choir, plus the talent of the Kâ€"W Symphony orchestra, especially first violinist Irving IImer. This style has been done before, but Dyck has mastered it to nearâ€"perfection with the achievement of an extraordinary choral spectacle. â€" â€" â€" _ RESTAURANT & TAVERN This Weeks Specials Hot & Cold Buffet......... 5* / BBQ Chicken Plate As4S with potato and salad bar . . Mezzoâ€"soprano Margaret Kuhl, lent a graciousness and eloquence to her solos, especially Agnus Dei, a performance highlight. â€" o o _ a:ch’s Latin mass, the entire ensemble braved this melodic t of Bach‘s faith superbly. This piece is extremely demanding due to continual vocal variations, in range and exact interpretation. _ . ‘The soloists were occasionally weak in pockets, due to ac_gou§t'§cn_l_ pro_l_:lerqs and differentiating structures. Tenor Douglas Robinson, exuded a confidence and overâ€" whelming spirit with the piece singing the memorable Benedictus without the familiar security of a choir book. It was obvious to the house Robinson had committed his parts to loving memory. The joy on his face was plain to see. Kuh] and soprano Neufeld blended well, the spritely soprano a little stronger in duo arias. Both were inspiring as they delivered complex melody, with deserved audience awe. The Kâ€"W Philharmonic Choir had been rehearsing Bach‘s Mass in B Minor for months, prior to this outstanding perforâ€" mance.
