PAGE 16 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY Fine family diningâ€"a tradition since 1962 Coral Andrews Chronicle Special The Breakfast Club, now at the Cineplex, deals with five students serving dentention one fateful Saturday in an upperâ€"middle class superb highâ€"school library. Each one has earned this sentence admir ably. At first, they are total strangers, with nothing in common just a brain, a beauty, a jock, a rebel, and a recluse. But during the course of the day, the group find a common bond, through breaking the rules and bearing their souls. They soon discover each one is a brain, an athlete, ‘a basket case‘, a princess and a criminal. And they cockily refer to this newlyâ€"formed pentagon as the Breakfast Club. Writer/director/producer John Hughes (Sixâ€" teen Candles) valiantly tries to create contemâ€" porary commentary, about the trouble people have with the simple process of communicaâ€" tion. Here is a prime example of art echoing life echoing art. An extraordinary camaraderie is developed, but many questions are raised as the five continually misbehave, smoke dope and crawl around the school ventilation system, creating as much havoc as possible. It just doesn‘t happen that way in the real world. Top marks in this adolescent schlock talk is Judd Nelson as John Bender, the ultimate highâ€"school rebel, complete with hacked leather gloves, pierced earring, dishevelled hair and wellâ€"worn sweats. Bender‘s the kid from the wrong side of the tracks, honest and amusing as he probes his peers mercilessly. Set to Simple Minds dazzling hit ‘Don‘t You Forget About Me‘ (though one wonders why they would do a soundtrack for this Valley Girl meets Rebel Without A Cause!) The Breakfast Club could have been fairly digestable. Due to student â€" teacher cliches, and farfetched circumstance, this Breakfast Club is out to lunch. It‘s hard to tell whether the audience is laughing at the absurdity of the situation, or the ‘highâ€"school confidential of the characters‘ outlandish dialogue. This rebel minority delight in tormenting Dean of Students Richard Vernon (Paul Gleaâ€" son), who‘s similiar to the Dean Werner role in Animal House. Vernon is the antagonist who melds the club together. He isn‘t ‘hip‘ enough to today‘s kids and their problems, the exact opposite of John Kapelos as Carl, the highâ€"school jJanitor, eyes and ears of the academic populus. from Sears Portrait Studio 23 color portraits for only Photographic package includes two 8x 10‘s, three 5x7‘s, fifteen wallet size and 3 portrait charms No appointment necessary. 95¢ for each additional subject Poses our selection Studios located in most larger Sears retail stores Portraits to celebrate Offer for portraits taken Mon.
