Coral Andrews Chronicle Special © The Borodin String Quartet, named after the father of Russian quartet music, Alexander Borodin, is one of the best chamber ensembles in the world. But even masters have their moments. * A broken string during Tchaikovsky, became an iceâ€"breaker with an enthusiastic crowd. Instead of awkward silence, the almost capacity Theatre of the Arts crowd reciprocated with warm response. â€" As each member slowly departed from the stage, it seemed a touch comical to see bemused second violinist Dimitri Shebalin sitting in the spotlight. Finally he exited, which gave the audience the perfect excuse to show appreciation, and infinite respect which turned disaster into delight. . The four Russians were dazzling to watch, as they delivered thick textures, dark haunting harmonies, and a magnificent display of showmanship through the works of Mozart, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. â€" focused on their stern concentration GARY WINGER Waterloo Town Square 746â€"1080 They followed each other instinctively, each audience eye We‘ve got plans that can keep premiums low while your family is young. The final movement literally burst with energy, spirit and Kopelman‘s fateful string. Mozart‘s Quartet in D Minor, second of six string quartets dedicated to composer Joseph Haydn. centered on Valentin Berlinsky‘s cello line, defined with a chilling accomplishâ€" mert. Just as one drifted into this gentle movement, the pace changed to a fanciful finale based on gypsy themes. Though first violinist Kopelman snapped his top string during the rousing conclusion of Tchaikovsky‘s Quartet in A Minor, this entire work was clearly the evening‘s high point. From Mozart‘s austere minuet, to the seriousness of the final movement, the foursome executed this piéce with grim billiance. Brahms Quartet Op 51 No 2 in A Minor, provided a wealth of beauty encased in tender melancholy. Here was a concert of contrasts. The house marvelled at the beautiful melody of Brahm‘s andante, a fluid duet between first violinist Mikail Kopelman and cellist Berlinsky.
