PAGE 8 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 1985 ‘Weight training has become increasingly more popular as a way to increase muscle strength and muscle tone. The dilemma which faces those who have not used weights beforé and would like to, is whether to use free weights such as barbells, or a "high tech" weight machine. Both types of training equipment have advantages, but the type for you personally to use depends entirely on what training goals and results you would like to see Free weights (weights that are not attached to a machine and can easily be moved around) ean be used much in the same manner as the weights on a weight machine. The same movements can be performed. There are, however, some movements which can only be done using free weights. Lifting a weight from the floor to the shoulder, for example, can only be done using free weights. In this regard, free weights are more versatile. They provide free moving, "total body" exercises such as the Clean, Half Squat and Press, a weight lifting movement. Such compound exercises such as this work many different muscle groups at the same time producing a pronounced coâ€"ordination beâ€" tween muscle groups. This multiâ€"movement training results in more work done in a unit of time; greater neuromuscular coâ€"ordination (the brain and muscles working together); greater involvement of important assistant muscles (for example with lifting the weight from the floor to the shoulder, not only are the arm muscles required, but the legs, abdominâ€" al, and back muscles.); and a more complete overâ€"all training effect. (More muscles used.) Free weights are less safe though than working with a machine. Greater caution must be exercised when training with free . We‘re having a %New Year‘s Party! . 485 KING N. Designed cams, pulleys, cylinâ€" ders, and weights make these systems far better than any other equipment previously available. So the makers of these machines claim. They do offer many advantages over free weights. 2. they have safety features eliminating having to balance a weight; 3. several different exercise stations are compacted together making the machine space efficient; 4. they permit exercises which will concenâ€" trate on one muscle at a time; 5. some permit alternating contraction for opposite muscle groups such as the tricep and bicep, making the machine a timeâ€" saver; 6. some machines have automatic counters or readâ€"outs to help you keep track of repâ€" etitions. In spite of the many advantages to using a machine, there are a few disadvantages as well; 1. they permit quick and easy resistance o most machines involve only static exerâ€" cises and do not improve balance or neuromuscular coâ€"ordination; some machines automatically resist the force you exert upon it. You may kid yourself and get inferior results; most machines are programmed â€" they can only do a specific number of exercises, preventing the simulation of many sportâ€"related activities.
