The New York City Opera Na- tional Company, founded in 1979 by Beverly Sills as the touring divi- sion of the New York City Opera, brings its production of Verdi's Rigoletto to Centre in the Square Saturday at 8 p.m. While the New York City Opera National Company will be per- forming in 30 cities in the United States, this coral performance is its only Canadian appearance! Verdi's Rigoletto is an explorti- tion of complex characters and intense emotions. Its central fig- ure, the hunchbacked jester, Rigo- letto leads a mysterious double life. Verdi's celebrated aria, ‘La Donna " Mobile,' captures both the charismatic appeal and deplorable decadence of the rakish Duke. The cast of this production includes Michael Sylvester, as the Duke of Mantua, Robert McFar- land as Rigoletto. George Reid as Sparafucile, Joyce Guyer as Gilda. and Joan Campbell as Maddalena. The performance is conducted by George Manahan. This National Company tour of Rigoletto will mark the first time that a touring opera production is presented with subtitles. As the performers sing the opera in Italian, a simultaneous English translation is projected onto a screen suspended above the stage. This revolutionary innovation in opera provides 'instant under- standing.' Tickets are $35.50 and $30.50. (-iNtaiGaashaashuwart,relr, Humanities Theatre $9.50 ($8.00 Stu. /Sen.)
