fiii' After tinisNng an Introductory computer course with my children, i could not help but notice how fatigued and lethargic we were from sitting in front of a computor for half an hour. Not only did our eyes tire, but because of the inappropriate height of the keyboard and video display screen orD'r), NH could not stay comfortable for very long. t Offices throughout North America are installing VDT's at a rate of one every minute, 24 hours a day. More than half the office workers will be sitting in front of some kind of computer terminal by the end of the decade. Though the highly-sophisticated computers greatly increase work productivity and em- ciency, they also greatly increase job stress that many VDT operators are experiencing. Quite literally, operators are finding their jobs a pain in the neck. First there is the considerable stress and anxiety of having to learn how to operate the computers, particularily if it is on the Jolt training and work gets behind during training. This type of stress soon disappears, however, when the skill is learned and the work caught up. The more lasting concern is the physical problems. If the computer station is not designed or laid out properly to suit the worker. fatigue, eye strain. muscle tension, and even lingering acute pain in the back, neck and shoulder can occur. Ergonomics, the study of efficient work performance, is now playing an increasingly important role in offices. The specialists, or ergonimists. try to design office equipment, including computer terminals. to suit the human body to permit comfort and a high performance level. . If you are a VDT operator, ergonomists have come up with a list of suggestions to ease stress and discomfort. Below are just a few; -.-t-ot, ME. MY.” 18, was tity: OlFrllF: Sun.. Mon. Sit up straight and keep your feet an on the thtor. If you have access to I small block tor under your feet, that would even be better, to eliminate over-extending your feet and legs. . 2. Use a chair which provides good lower back support. The back of your chair should make firm contact with your lower back four to six inches above the seat. A small kidney shaped cushion may be necessary it using an old or outdated chair. The seat should swivel and the backrest tilt to aeeomodttte routine body movements. The seat should also be designed so as not to cut into the back of the legs, restricting blood circulation. 3. _ Keyboard" height should permit your forearms to be horizontal when typing, with your elbows bent_at a 00 degree angle. . _ 4. The space between the keyboard and screen should be used for the original copy you are working from. This will eliminate tiring head movements which can be stressful or painful hours later. 5. The VDT screen should be directly in front of you and at least an arm's length away. The screen should be below eye level, rather then directly in front. When your eyes tire it is easier to work with the lids dropped slightly than looking up. The screen should be able to tilt to avoid any retleeted glare on the screen. If this is not possible eye exercises can be done to relieve any aching or tiredness. Squeeze your eyes tightly and open them wide. Roll your eyes around to strenghten them and increase their endurance. If the company you work for is not involved with office equipment that js idgally suitef fr you, make sure you get up from in front of the computer at least during your breaks. Take a walk to the water fountain to stretch your legs and change your body position. £13213: JMSI.WMIM.
