PAGE 10 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1985 *‘This wasn‘t planned this way," he said. "I moved in here primarily to sell my inventory to buy my retirement years. But you can‘t stand still in business. I keep buying collections because, in the stamp world, you have to continually show things that are new and different or collectors will go elsewhere to satisfy their wants." Beaupre happens to be the propriâ€" etor of Kitchenerâ€"Waterioo‘s last shop dedicated solely to the pursuit of philately, or stamp collecting for the uninitiated. "It was a hobby â€" because of the availability of accessories for the hobby, I started to sell them. Later, I started to sell stamps as well. It started small and just kept growâ€" ing,"" Beaupre recalled. ‘‘You have to remember, Waterâ€" loo in the ‘50s wasn‘t like it is today â€" we didn‘t have a variety of stores, so that anything that made sense, we added to our shop. That‘s how we got into carpeting, that‘s how we got into toys, and that‘s how I got into stamps." With the sale of Beaupre‘s Interiâ€" ors in 1979, Beaupre moved his stamps and supplies into a smali shop at 44 King St. S. where it remains today. Melodee Martinuk Chronicie Staff Most people buy their stamps one or two at a time. Harold Beaupre buys them by the ton. Most recently, twoâ€"andâ€"aâ€"half tons, to be exact. Although Beaupre had been a stamp collector since he was nine years old, it wasn‘t until 1958 that his hobby became a business and he started selling stamps and related supplies out of a paint and wallâ€" paper store in Waterloo which he ran with a partner. Harold Beaupre preserves art of stamp collecting Of course, when he does retire, and there are no plans for that yet, Beaupre says he‘ll start his collecâ€" tion up again. **I learned my lesson quite early," he said. "A fellow came to the house and wanted to buy a stamp I had in my own collection. I said ‘no‘. He replied, ‘what are you a collector or a dealer‘. 1 sold the stamp ... I‘m a dealer and all my stamps are for sale." "‘It‘s a nice hobby, but I made my business out of it. Now you could say my hobby is coliecting stamp coliecâ€" ‘‘The interest is still there, but one thing that has taken away from the hobby is the economy â€" many people just can‘t afford to collect stamps any more,""‘ he said. Through the years, Beaupre has built up a solid clientele, nevertheâ€" less he sees ‘"new faces‘ every day and feels interest in the hobby isn‘t waning. The only drawback of becoming a dealer, however, is that Beaupre has found it impossible to continue stamp collecting as a hobby. Because of inflation, the past few years have been difficult ones for stamp dealers and in recent months, Beaupre has watched as two of his fellow dealers in the area have been forced to close. ly be seen in his shop, where drawers, binders and showboxes, stuffed with stamps, are tucked into virtually every available space. *‘*I‘d hate to even guess how many stamps I have," said Beaupre. *‘*Some stamps are very, very cheap and available by the thousands; others are very rare. By now, I must have at least a few million stamps."‘ The implications of this can clearâ€" Maybe I can save you some money on insufance GARY WINGER Sears, Watertoo Town Square 746â€"1080 See or phone You‘re in good hands> Allstate Insurance Company Allstate Lite Ins Co of Canada (* Allatate Insurance Company Call me and compare FRITZ ELECTRIC ; 3 ALTERNATIVES _ GET "OFFâ€"OIL" NOW!
