PAGE 8 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2* goâ€"â€"ernqrepiipenerarmmmomemyenens . Rather than spend money on the many foot products on the market, you can do something for your feet which will be especially nice at this time of year. If you know of someone who has a foot fetish, you‘ve got it made. Otherwise, you‘ll have to treat your feet yourself...to a massage. Frequent foot masâ€" sage is a must for everyone who suffers cold and tired feet. The Arch: Place the fingers of your right hand flat over the top of your left foot. Your thumb goes under your instep. Press the toes down, which will increase the arch in your foot. Fallen arches often cause the feet to tire easily, also causing the body to be out of alignment, spoiling your posture. The twistâ€"out: Place one foot on top of your other leg, just above the knee. (If this calls for more flexibility than you can muster, bring the foot as close to your body as possible. Sitting on the floor would be best.) With one hand on top of your foot and the other underneath, twist your foot, so the small toe comes up toward your body, and the big toe away from your body. _ _ The pressâ€"up: Place both hands under the ball of your foot and pull up as far as possible. Alternate feet, and alternate this exercise with the Arch to improve foot and ankle flexiâ€" bility. The twistâ€"in: Hold the foot in the same position, but twist it the opposite way, so the big toe goes down and away from your body, and the small toe comes up. Alternate this massage with the previous one, until your ankle feels worked. This will strengthen your ankles. ° Toe spread: Grasp your foot with both hands, placing the thumbs on top and fingers underneath. First spread your toes wide. Continue the separation by pressing your thumbs into the flesh of the foot between the bones of the toes. Spend about one minute on each foot. Press your thumbs hard against the ball of your foot in small circles, as though you were trying to loosen the bones in the foot. Heel cord relaxer: Tight heel cords lead to fatigue, ruining your posture and spoiling your walk. (The heel cords can be found at the back of your heel. Just grasp behind the heel, and no doubt you will find them.) Start at the back of the heel, and move the cords slowly back and forth. Move your fingers up the back of yourâ€"leg until yO8u can no longer grasp the cords. Repeat this action until your ankle and foot feel relaxed. A good exercise which works well with the heel cord massage involves a thick book, such as a telephone book. Stand on the book with your toes and balls of your feet. Let your heel hang freely off the end of the book. Press your heels down in short definite movements, stretching the cords. Five sets of 10 will be enough to take the tension out ‘of your foot, which can cause all kinds of foot problems. You need to do them regularly, however. Another good stretch is to stand with your legs together. Slowly lower yourself down by bending your knees. Make sure your back remains upright and your heels stay on the floor. Hold the stretch for about 10 seconds and slowly come up keeping your upright posture. This exercise will stretch the heel cords, strengthen your thighs, strengthen your ankles. It will also help you to obtain a better posture just by lowering yourself and coming up with your back straight. If you keep your rearâ€"end tucked in, you‘ll be strengthenâ€" ing it as well. After using these massaging techniques and doing the accompanying exercises, your feet should feel warm and flexible. This is because you will have worked the muscles in the lower leg and foot, preparing them for any activity or exercise which will follow. ~_~VIC FOSTER‘S TRAVEL SERVICE tailored to , your skin tanes , custom made Silk Clothing . . . colours to your order Coordmation of clothing styles, fabric tertures. glasses‘ frames, hats. etc. to compliments your body shape Coordination of wardrobe . and accessories Hand painted Silks, 6 MARKET VILLAGE KITCHENER the ~ORGINAL* 744â€"3182 Call 886â€"1420 w The Waterloo County Board of Education Register: at the school, 7â€"9 p.m. â€" Tuesday January 29 and Thursday January 31 Classes begin: Tuesday February 5 all courses are 18 weeks, Tuesday and Thursday evenings 2% hours per session (7â€"9:30 p.m.) Fees: No tuition fees are charged for Credit Courses $30 retundable deposit is required for all grade 11, 12, 13 courses ($25 refunded if 85% or more of classes are attended) $30 refundable deposit required for Adult Basic Education and Adult : Upgrading Deposits are collected on the first night of the course. * ADULT BASIC EDUCATION â€" grade 8 or iess improve your English or Mathematics skills for everyday use or entry into high school diploma programs * ACADEMIC UPGRADING â€" Grade 10 or iess Tutorial credit courses in basic Mathematics and English Mathematics offered Tuesday, English offered Thursday * these programs open to those 18 and older and out of school a year or more GRADE 9 (Year 1) Typing 1 BTY 141 GRADE 11 (Year 3) Art .
